TL;DR: this is surprisingly nice, both in terms of construction and in the diversity of stuff in the box. If you have the Intro Box Set, this will be a nice addition (and rules expansion). If you're an old-timer who has never played on the new gameboard quality maps, you owe it to yourself to do so. Probably the nicest BattleTech product I've ever bought, and the best value.I've been playing BattleTech since 1987, and for all of that time I've either played on the included hexmaps from the 80s and 90s boxed sets or on ones I made myself. The old cardboard maps have held up just fine, but they're nothing to write home about: the card is about the same weight as the walls of a cereal box, and they're only printed with terrain on one side (the reverse is a field of blank hexes). I made some of my own stack-on-top woods, hills, and water features by printing out 1-inch hexes and gluing them on foamcore board. All of that was plenty serviceable, but there's existing and then there's _living_. With this hexpack, it feels like I'm playing in style. There are three things in the box: the lakes and rivers hexmap, a bunch of punch out terrain features you can use to customize your maps, and a manual. Each one is worth a few words. The hexmap is the same size as the classic maps from the old boxed sets, 18x22" and 15x17 hexes. It's printed in full color on both sides. One side has a couple of lakes and the other has a long river, both with a few hills and woods around for variety. The nicest thing about the hexmap is the quality of the board itself. It's described on the box as "gameboard quality", which means that it's not cereal box cardboard, but more like the gameboards for any of the classic tabletop boardgames like Risk or Monopoly. It folds up into sixths, so folded it's about 9x7.5". The board is stiff enough that it won't want to sit down flat the first time you set it out, but if you park a couple of books on top it will flatten out just fine. I freakin' LOVE this map, and if it was all that came in the box, this would still be a good deal. The punch-out terrain features might seem like an afterthought, but trust me, they're not. You get a whole board's worth of stuff, ranging from a really big lake down through ponds and streams to a bunch of single-hex features. And it's not all water stuff: there are woods, rough ground, rubble, and even a building (which makes a great objective for capture-the-flag games). I was expecting these punch-out pieces to be cheaply made, but they're not--they're on heavy linen cardstock, like the playing pieces for Carcassonne or any of the nicer boardgames from the past decade. Then there's the manual. I expected this to be completely superfluous--who needs a manual to use a hexmap, for cryin' out loud?--but again I was pleasantly surprised. The booklet is 16 pages, staple-bound, and printed in full color. It has three scenarios, two from 3039 and one from 2859 that ties into the Sword and Dragon campaign book. Almost all of the mechs used in the scenarios are from the Introductory Box Set and their record sheets can be freely downloaded from Catalyst Game Labs. The manual also has a bunch of optional rules not included in the Intro Box Set, including: clearing woods, buildings (and how to knock them down), underwater combat, and a variety of planetary conditions (extreme temps, wind, snow, hail, and, in the 2859 scenario, night combat). It is illustrated throughout with photos of fully painted miniatures on miniature terrain setups. All of the above stuff stores in a plastic clamshell container that fits into a cardstock slipcase, so you can store it lying flat or standing up on a bookcase.Bottom line, I wish I had known about this sooner. It's a surprisingly nice, versatile pack of stuff with very high production values. It would work well for any hex-based wargame (OGRE, etc.), not just Battletech. Highly recommended.
I have to say that this is one of the best products ever released for Battletech. The double sided mapsheet is printed on a sturdy cardboard that'll stand up to years of gaming. Another great addition to old paper hex maps is the punch outs. These range from one hex forest spots to multihex small lakes and river pieces. The punch outs give the boards much needed variety. My only gripe is that there is only one mapsheet. So for basic Battletech game you'll have to buy two of these if you don't own any hex mapsheets. Otherwise a brilliant product. Let's hope that Catalyst Game Labs will print more of these in the future.
It certainly arrived in JapanThank you
I love this item. I use the game board quality maps instead of the paper ones now. Can't wait for the 25th anniversary box set or the next hexpack, cities and roads!
