About the Author

Elizabeth Perkins was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She started traveling in 2008 when she spent a semester studying in the Dominican Republic. Just got back from Nicaragua using Moon's book as my major guide. I purchased it because it was the most recent, and it wasn't bad but I think in the accumulation of much information about the country the author included material not exactly accurate. The Bluefields section needs to be updated. The major tour operator in the area, Atlantic Tours, could not be located and I was told no longer exists. The same could be said of the Bluefields Bay Hotel where I once stayed years ago. It is a construction sight supposedly being remodeled with a few decrepit rooms with bucket showers. The adjacent Tia Irene restaurant, pleasantly situated over the water, did not have any seafood to eat the night I stopped by! Describing El Bluff having a "gorgeous little Caribbean white sand beach" is ridiculous. I have been to many "gorgeous" Caribbean beaches. The desolate dark abandoned seashore at El Bluff is to be avoided. Actually, the recommended beach at Poneloya near Leon is only slightly better. Head to Las Penitas instead. Finally, travelers need to know that the Corn Islands are being swamped with tourists at least in the "season" and lodging can be hard to find unless arranged ahead of time. Prices are shooting up as well. Overall, I had a great visit (my fourth). Travelers need to do their homework on the internet to complement this guide as well as any others.

Fantastic guide. It is very well written and has lots of great quality photography to go with the descriptions. All pages are in color. I ordered 2 other guides about Nicaragua but this is the one I would highly recommend. It covers regions and areas very well that are not even mentioned in the Lonely planet.

We purchased this book in early December 2015 and promptly put it to work. We spent three weeks lugging this book around, using it as a reference companion to the internet. It doesn't have the abundance of information that the internet has, but it has what most people need. We used multiple hotel/hostel choices from the book and felt the small blurbs about them were pretty close to the actual results.this is an excellent book to plan your trip with and use while in country. we will purchase more Moon handbooks for upcoming trips as a result of this experience.

We just came back from Nicaragua and are glad that we got (and brought with us) this latest edition of guidebook. The information is relevant and correct. It's also an interesting read, which is always a bonus. We had bought other guidebooks before that were just so boring to read and literally put off our interest is visiting the country (can you imagine!?). Highly recommended.

This is one of the most useless guidebooks I ever bought.Information is outdated by several years (this edition was published just 2 weeks before I travelled), and sometimes just plain wrong. For instance don't bother going to Casacada Blanca near Matagalpa, you can't swim since someone drowned there due to dangerous undercurrents!The maps are not easy to use, and I really have the feeling the author hasn't been to most places in the book for a very long time, if ever.

I selected this book because the Lonely Planet version had not been updated in almost 3 years. i just returned from Nicaragua and i can tell you that this book has not been not updated either, given the publication date of December 2015, 6th edition. the maps are ok, but there isn't enough information in this book to help you make travel choices. for example, in the lagoon de apoyo section, under 'lodging and food' there are 3 or 4 lodging places mentioned, and nothing about food. i found this in each section of the book, for every area we visited, details just completely missing. i am not sure who does the travel writing or investigation but perhaps less Tona's and more details, eh? suggestion to the editor to actually try to use this book to travel and see how far you get!this was my first use of a Moon book and based on this experience i would not buy another.

Very helpful for the trip several of us made to there. The people are very friendly and made you feel welcome.

This is a fantastic read. I read it in one go, I really wanted to find out what would happen. It's time travel that makes sense, which is rare in stories that try to explain things. He very effectively conveys the creepiness of an abandonded New York.(The pedant in me is forced to point out that the girls can't be using gasoline in the twenty two years ahead future; gas is absolutely worhtless after, at the very best, five years.)I did have a problem with the characters, though; with two exceptions, the rich kids were all horrible, sociopathic or stupid. I'm not sayng rich people can't have those problems, anyone can, but everyone in the group? Without anyone outside it seeming to know, apart from the professionals - who don't seem to be doing much about it? One of the exceptions outright stated it was because they were rich, so it comes off as more of a rant against rich people than anything else.But the story itself was amazing, and really cleverly done. I'd definitely read more from this author or in this series if there were any. And I hope there are, because he left some threads dangling!

Elaine Khosrova is an independent writer who specializes in stories about food history and gastronomic culture. A former pastry chef and fellowship student at the Culinary Institute of America, Elaine holds a BS in food and nutrition. She began her career in food publishing as a test kitchen editor at Country Living magazine, followed by staff positions at Healthy Living, Classic American Home, and Santé Magazine. In 2007, she received a Gold Folio journalism award, and in 2008 she became the founding editor of culture, a national consumer magazine about specialty cheese that continues to serve cheese enthusiasts. She’s contributed to numerous national food and lifestyle publications, as well as the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Cheese. After many excursions into the world of dairy for the sake of cheese lit, Elaine left culture magazine in 2013 to begin research on her book about butter--the first and only publication (thus far) to chronicle the life and times of this beloved fat. As founder and chief curator of Butterworld (butterworld.org), a traveling exhibition showcasing unique, rare, and historical dairy artifacts from around the world, I love reading books about the history of dairy products, especially butter.  Elaine Khosrova has done an amazing job of documenting butter’s rich history and I learned so much additional information that I had not come across earlier.  This book will definitely be a part of my collection at Butterworld and I will also use it as a reference when I give tours of my Butterworld dairy artifacts collection going forward.  This book belongs on the bookshelf of every butter lover, and who doesn’t love butter!

I've traveled the world, and discovered the wonders of butter. I'd been brought up on standard sticks of American "Butter", When I went to Europe on the '80's I discovered the variety and flavors that this simple product can be found, and how to use in cooking. I went to India for work, and discovered the wonders of cooking with Ghee.This was a great book on the history of butter, and found some types I've never tried before. Nice combination of story telling with information on butter making I bought a hardback copy for myself, and a softback copy to give to a friend who also loves butter.

I love reading about the history of food and cooking, and this is a fascinating, in-depth look at butter- mostly, but not exclusively, bovine.Approximately 2/3rds of the book is devot3d to the history of butter in human societies.The rest includes an extensive and seductive assortment of butter-centric recipes, plus various appendices with artisan butter producers, a bibliography, and other notes. It is now heading into winter here, and I am excited to start trying tomake some of the laminated doughs like puff pastry, croissants, and the like!Very recommended for fans of food history and, of course, BUTTER.

I really highly value this book. It's a very thorough and comprehensive piece of work. I read it first from my local library, and discovered it's well worth the cost, which isn't steep to begin with. I'm buying copies for my friends in the culinary fields as well as every medical professional I can justify getting it for, especially the folks who have never looked into the flawed methodology behind the research that led to the modern "ban on butter". The author has delved deeply yet concisely into the history, the chemistry, the flavor and consistency, the biology, and recipes to top it off. I'd recommend the hardback version as this is something for the generations, but the visual pun of the paperback cover is a nice touch.

Food nerd alert! Ms. Khosrova's book "BUTTER: A Rich History" is a well researched, easy to read book on a pantry staple. As a chef I appreciated her peripatetic exploits to understand what is a deceptively simple food stuff that has a rich history. Having made butter from scratch, it puts into perspective how great it is to live in an age where it's so readily available. The bonus recipes are staples for the classically trained Chef.

A great book, well-written first and foremost, but delightful in its composition, starting with history, through past and modern production, and then the use of butter. The book ends with an encouragement for the reader to expand their own use of butter - through recipes, recommended high-quality butters to purchase, and instructions on making one's own. By my estimation, it is a thoroughly researched subject, augmented by many first-hand accounts by the author, which required extensive travel, but has led to an engaging and comprehensive narrative that's a joy to read. I lived in Wisconsin for thirty years, the first five in a rural community in the midst of dairy farms (and dated the daughter of a dairy farmer for a time), and this book captures the lives of people involved in dairy industry. The recipe selection is a well thought out "greatest hits" collection, highlighting the flavor and texture that butter provides. Many of these recipes have been favorites of mine for decades (Pound Cake, German Pancakes, Butterscotch, to name a few not currently in vogue) - my palate obviously favoring butter flavor over sweetness. I found this book searching for a recipe for Old Fashioned Buttercream Frosting (aka Danish Frosting or Ermine Frosting), a stable and less sweet and more buttery version than classic American Buttercream. When time permits, try the silky European Buttercream Frosting; it's worth the time to prepare. Once you have tried these two versions of buttercream, you will not go back to the standard version popular in the US. Me, I am going to try each of these recipes and also try my hand at making my own butter.

We are again in this re-education period and picked up this book to get some additional ideas. In general, this book covers pretty standard material. I was hoping it would have some insights that I have not been taught before, but this was not the case. It does not address how to deal with realities that sometimes interfere with idealized Agile approach, like having to work on multiple problems at the same time. Agile assumes that people are interchangeable and anyone can work on any problem, however in reality people become experts in a particular area and so when some problem happens in that area a person has to work on multiple things at once contrary to the Agile philosophy. I was hoping for some creative solutions to this issue, but this course covers the by the book idealized approach.Ali Julia review

Really impressed with the amount of info in this book. It doesn't even begin talking about those 21 tips. It starts off with a powerful intro highlighting scrum theory and then shifting to the skeleton of scrum and making start comparisons against traditional project management. The best part of all is how the tips are laid out towards the end of the book. I only say "end of the book" because it is the last chapter but it covers so much and explains every tip in great detail. I was super enlightened with these tips and feel more focused and determined in handling future projects.

This book brought me some awesome insight. I work for a large corporation that tends to lead by force. They are expecting us managers to demand performance from our associates. I can true see the benefits of changing our role to into the scrum master approach. Then we could rally our team verses trying to force them into doing more. I really am inspired by this type of guidance.

Great resource on scrum. A lot of the various meetings are described including the daily standup meetings. You will learn how to improve product owner efficiency, boost team communication, and manage your team well.

Unless you are already versed in Scrum, this book is not for you. It assumes you already know Scrum concepts and only provides 'tips.' Even at that, the majority of the tips are common sense (which, to be fair, is not all that common).

He connects the dots that so much commentary treats only as a hazy and inexplicable 'loss of morality' or 'changing of the times'. He places our current morally degraded state into historical context, and in the most specific terms introduces us to the people who brought us here. Highly recommended.

The Merchants of Sin is a hard hitting book. It's a book that will keep you up at night and have you frantically read through pages, looking for the end of this nightmare that has yet to come. As it's mainline suggests, it seeks to show, and does so perhaps too well, the involvement of Jews in the subversion of Western values in America in the last 100 years. From Jews peddling smut in New York at the turn of the century to phycological manipulation and organized revolutions in the 50's and 60's, Garland's Merchant of Sin shows the true horrors of the Jew's quest for global supremacy.

My heart, mind and body was cultured through late 60's... and experienced so much of the dysfunction of the time and rebelliousness from what I remember. Fortunately, an outside 'Angel' I think saved me and my family on some level early in my childhood. Although turbulent, because of that 'Angel', I experienced on some level a more Christian upbringing and morality, and as I look back even experience what I feel were 'miracles'. Today, -- I have realized so much infiltration by the 'destroyers', as they have called themselves. But "they" didn't ruin it all.Reading this book, reveals the septic and putrid infection of mind spewing on our society, as I look back on my youth. The utter "sickness of mind" that seems to come out of 'Hell' (I don't know what else to call it) that blankets our culture and media kind of like in "The Matrix", where we can't discern what deceptions we are born and indoctrinated into. Having learned what a manufactured and intentional virus being spread on the minds of the young to pervert and maim... well, it just makes me embrace morality and goodness all the more, these I learned from the basic valued Christ taught, -- SIMPLE life of caring about family, children and nature. I feel sorry and pity for these 'Jews', what kind of upbringing and life could they have when it seems their only goal is to 'destroy, pervert, debase and murder' the moral, caring, and Christian culture. What a dark and tortured mind these people must have.Thank you so very much Benjamin Garland for writing this "VERY disturbing, but incredibly informative and well written book. Sadly, I realized when reading this book.... the 'majority' of moral, traditional, Constitutional 'Bill of Rights' mind had, and have no idea what "demonic minds" were on the attack and how far they would go... but, too many have fallen asleep. Jesus said "Know Thine Enemy".... WELL THIS IS THE WAY TO KNOW THEM.... read this book.!

I purchased this book but didn't start reading until recently. I finished it within a week. One topic that stood out was the so-called Nazi book burning propaganda that we are all so familiar with. If only American Evangelical Christians today were aware of the smut those books contained, the burning of them would make sense. Chapter V deals with the people and deeds that led up to the "Hirschfeld bonfire", and much more. That chapter alone would be worth the price. Only someone in total denial could read this book and not accept the blunt truth within.

Truth seekers must read. You won’t be able to put it down. This is what this mongrel group had done to Germany and why Hitler tossed them out on their arses. Also know this, holocaust was Roosevelt’s and his general son’s brainstorm in order to solicit sympathy for the mongrel Canaanites and to dredge up lies against Germany so that FDR could gain support for the wars he so desperately wanted to wage. Read Germany’s War by John Wear and start opening your eyes.

About the Author

Naomi Alderman is the recipient of the 2017 Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction for The Power. She is also the author of The Liars' Gospel and Disobedience, which won the Orange Prize for New Writers, has been published in ten languages, and has been made into a film by Rachel Weisz. If you haven’t read it, you’ve probably seen it: Margaret Atwood’s THE HANDMAID’S TALE, published in 1985 but made newly famous by the Hulu miniseries. It’s likely the best-known dystopia in recent history, and I mention it because Atwood’s monumental presence hangs over this book. Not that Naomi Alderman is a nobody. Her debut novel, DISOBEDIENCE, got the Orange Award for New Writers in 2006, and THE POWER, her latest (first published in the UK), won the 2017 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. But Atwood is clearly a friend and mentor (the book is dedicated to her and her husband), and as for the theme --- well, call it the anti-HANDMAID’S TALE.The women in THE HANDMAID’S TALE become, essentially, sex slaves and baby receptacles, while in Alderman’s book, they dominate the world --- physically. Sometime in the distant past, a new organ of the body, the skein, shows up in teenage girls and enables them to generate electric shocks that can maim, manipulate and kill. Soon this capability spreads to older women, abruptly shifting the balance of gender power and the nature of reality itself.Alderman frames her novel with a satirical device. We are now in a future where women have been in charge for thousands of years, and one Neil Adam Armon, a member of The Men Writers Association (male novelists being so rare and unexpected a breed that they have to be labeled as such), is showing an historical novel to his mentor, an eminent author by the name of “Naomi Alderman.” Neil’s manuscript, The Power, purports to trace the origins of the matriarchy, positing an earlier age in which men were the ruling gender.The narrative alternates among four main characters, all smart and ambitious, each showing different sides of the march toward a gender flip-flop. There is Allie, who kills her sexually abusive foster father, then escapes to a convent, where she hears voices, heals the sick, adopts the name Mother Eve, and founds a cult based on a feminist reinterpretation of the Bible. There is Tunde --- the only male character of any weight --- an attractive young Nigerian man who becomes the blogger/video chronicler of the female takeover. Margot is the mayor of an East Coast city whose power is activated by her adolescent daughter. She becomes governor, then senator, developing military training camps for girls and realizing that “the power to hurt is a kind of wealth” --- even if you don’t use it. Finally, Roxy, daughter of a London crime family, witnesses her mother murdered around the same time as her skein comes alive. She becomes an international mover and shaker in the trade of a power-enhancing drug, Glitter, until betrayal and mutilation force her back on her own unenhanced toughness.The structure of THE POWER is in the form of a 10-year countdown --- but to what, at first the reader doesn’t know. The earliest stirrings of unrest are in countries where women have been most abused (Saudi Arabia, for one, and Moldova, a center of sex trafficking, for another), while in the West, media and government alike try to contain and normalize the situation. A sort of Greek chorus is provided by a TV news team, consisting first of Tom (lead anchor) and Kristen (eye candy), then evolving to Kristen (sober new face of the news) and Matt (sweet, decorative, earnest). As women organize, train and terrorize, they evoke an answering response among male extremists, until at last all four main characters converge in Eastern Europe. Women have broken away from Moldova to form the increasingly authoritarian female state of Bessaraba, culminating in...well, that would be telling.Alderman is a skillful writer whose book bristles with intelligence and wit. Sometimes, though, I felt distanced from the characters by her ironic tone, especially when it’s clear from several poignant passages that she can do more. Here, for example, are Tunde’s notes for the book he plans: “At first we [men] did not speak our hurt because it was not manly. Now we do not speak it because we are afraid and ashamed and alone.... It is hard to know when the first became the second.” And here are Roxy and Tunde, their bodies “rewritten by suffering,” making love: “They move slowly and easily, taking account of each other’s particular pains, smiling and sleepy, and for a moment without fear. They come with soft, animal grunts, snuffling into each other’s necks, and fall asleep like that, legs intertwined…in the center of a war.”The danger in any dystopian novel, I suppose, is that ideas will overwhelm character and plot. When Alderman returns in a coda to a further exchange of letters between Neil, the supposed author of The Power, and the future fictional version of herself, I found it unnecessarily didactic, if entertaining. Having read the manuscript, “Naomi” is by turns supportive and patronizing (she calls it “a fun exercise” in the reinterpretation of history). She can’t quite believe that Neil’s book is anything other than a heretical fairy tale. How could men, innately kind and nurturing, ever have been soldiers or rapists or pimps? How could the standard history of the world be nothing but a gigantic lie? The point, of course, is that history is fickle, amassing and legitimizing evidence that supports the winners, not the losers.At the very end, “Naomi” suggests that her protegé consider publishing under a female name. Surely this is meant to remind us of the Brontë sisters, sending JANE EYRE, WUTHERING HEIGHTS and AGNES GREY to London publishers under male pseudonyms in the 1840s. It’s amusing, in a ghastly way.THE POWER is often disturbing, sometimes exhilarating and, above all, a healthy reminder --- particularly apt in the age of Trump, Cosby and Weinstein --- that even if women do not experience male violence in an immediate physical sense, the implied threat is always with us. Often that is enough to keep us frightened, silent, intimidated, self-censoring and powerless.Reviewed by Katherine B. Weissman

To say it belabors its point is actually an understatement. SPOILER: According to The Power, women would be as corrupt as the most corrupt of men and behave like the worst and most violent sociopathic men if they could get away with it. Got it. And got it again. And again. And again.It starts out interesting enough, but by about halfway through, I was like, "OK I GET IT ALREADY." Overall it was pretty meh, except for multiple torture scenes that seemed to me to be excessive, graphic, and gratuitous. That seemed like authorial grandstanding, and I could have done without it.To summarize, I thought this was a mediocre read and can't believe it got the kind of attention and positive reviews it generated in high-profile media (e.g. NY Times, etc.) upon its release. Interesting idea, crappy execution. My recommendation: Life is short. There are far better books to spend your time and money on.

Oh my goodness, I had to force myself to finish this book. I'm in a women's book club, led by a university English professor, and whose members consist of several doctors, a psychologist, dentist and a private investigator. I was the ONLY one of us who actually finished the book. At our book club, we discussed why we hated it and came up with several ideas including that it was filled with so much anger (difficult to read when elections were going on), gender animosity, and meanness among humans. Admittedly, science fiction books are not my favorite, but I read so much that I have not 'quit' a book since junior high school. I'm 46 now. Seriously, not a good book at all. Don't waste your time.

At the heart of gender politics is the question of whether men and women are inherently different, or are shaped by our experiences. The Power takes this on by asking, what would happen if women gained a physical advantage over men? Would the world be transformed into a nurturing, empathetic utopia? Or do women and men who get power inevitably exploit it?The novel is framed as the manuscript of a (subservient) male academic called Neil, writing five thousand years in the future, which he has sent to ‘Naomi’ for review. He is trying to make sense of events that occurred in our present.The story begins when adolescent girls suddenly develop the power to deliver electric shocks. They can also awaken a latent power in some adult women. This causes dramatic social change, told through the stories of three female and one male characters. Roxy is a teenager from an East End gangster family, Ally, an American of around the same age who is running from abusive carers, Margot an ambitious US governor and single parent and Tunde, an ambitious freelance journalist from Nigeria.What’s interesting is that not all girls and women have the same power. Some have greater electrical capacity, and some are better able to control and use what they have. But there are also those who have the vision to see how the world is changing and how to use existing structures to exploit it. Immediately power begins to shift.Women in countries from Saudi Arabia to India rise up. The three female characters all see opportunities – Roxy in organised crime, Ally by starting the religious cult of Mother Eve and Margot by organising a public-private paramilitary organisation. Tunde travels the world documenting change and finds both allies and danger among the women he meets.The first part of the book also takes a nuanced approach to what the power might mean. At times the power is turned against women. They are barred from certain posts if they have it. There is talk of restrictions and cures. Teenage girls turn on each other. But as their power becomes more entrenched and men begin to encounter the limitations that some women do now (like not leaving home without the permission of a female guardian) it highlights to the reader how wrong and bizarre they are.As the novel went on though, I found my attention wandering and I struggled to finish it. There are a couple of reasons. The plot loses its way and the ending is a bit of a cop-out. There’s a certain amount of exposition. But the key problem is in the narration.When I think of the dystopian novels I’ve enjoyed the most (eg 1984, The Handmaid’s Tale) they show the workings of a society through the perspective of one character. You gain a rich, immersive sense of the fear and the humiliation and the tedium they face every day. Here we have a kind of helicopter view. The four main characters and those around them just aren’t that interesting as individuals and their stories overlap in ways that aren’t always convincing.They are all in positions of power and influence in some way, perhaps because those are the stories that would survive. They are all single at the start of the book so we don’t see how the changes affect long-term relationships and the institutions of marriage and the family (key areas for feminists). We also don’t have much sense of what happens to women and girls who have the physical power but no social or economic capital to exploit.The book ends with Naomi commenting on Neil’s manuscript, in particular being mildly dismissive of his assertion that men once dominated society, because there is little evidence of it in the historical record. Neil insists that is because those who have power decide what is history. This shows both the strength and weakness of the book to me. Soon, Clint and Susan are longing to be back on their honeymoon, as they seem to hit a dead end and are left contemplating whether or not the current mayor, Pauline Cain is their prime suspect. Of course, Pauline is doing herself no favours as Clint finds out she hasn't been particularly truthful about her where-abouts. Will they find the murderer.....well, y'all will have to read the book first to find the answer to that question :)

This story picks up just as Clint and Susan Wolf return from their honeymoon. Unfortunately, the couple has no time to catch up on their rest. They are catapulted into a murder scene that is as confusing as it is horrifying. Well defined characters and easily followed plot line.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all the other Clint Wolf books. The ends are a'm ways very unpredictable. I am very much looking forward to the next one.

Wonderfully written! BJ Bourg' s books are totally fascinating and you very rarely come close to figuring out who did it! I highly recommend all of his books!

A continuation of the great writing by BJ Bourg. Suspenseful from the first page until the last page. Great characters and story development.

As with the first six this was a really great book. It did make me cry. I will start the waiting process for book 8!!!!!!!

Mr. Bourg has done it yet again. Fast moving, twists and turns, spell binding until the end. And then I want more.

About the Author

James Sturm is a cartoonist and the cofounder of The Center for Cartoon Studies. His graphic novels include The Golem's Mighty Swing, Market Day, and Off Season. His picture books for children include Ape and Armadillo Take Over The World, Birdsong, and the Adventures in Cartooning series (with Andrew Arnold and Alexis Frederick-Frost). Rich Tommaso started writing and drawing original comics and graphic novels in 1993. He is mostly known for his series of crime novels, the first of which was Clover Honey. Since then, he has penned a few more crime books, including Sam Hill: The Cavalier Mr. Thompson, Dark Corridor and Dry County. At the moment he is drawing a new, but classically-styled, Dick Tracy comic series with Mike, Lee, and Laura Allred. Aside from his crime work he's made a dozen other comics and graphic novels in various genres, including Spy Seal, She Wolf, Vikings' End, Don't Look Back, 8 1/2 Ghosts, Perverso!, The Horror of Collier County, and a humorous travel book called Let's Hit the Road. He lives in Atlanta, GA with his girlfriend, Amy, and their two cats.

Although it is in black and white, this graphic novel is exellent autobiographical and biographical story combined. As Emmet Sr. tells his story, he links Satchel Paige's career with his own life. I found this combination of autobiography and biography quite interesting. Through Emmet's eyes, the reader can experience how Satchel was able to override the Jim Crow system through baseball, and one suspects that Emmet vicariously savors Satchel's boldness and sassiness before white people when he was in the ballpark. Just for a few moments I thought that the story of Emmett Till was a part of this graphic novel when the father narrates the story of his son's "mysterious" dissappearance. Fortunately, the narrator finds his son alive. However, the story is there to show the extent to which white people subdued blacks into social inferiority. The whole purpose of scaring Emmet by hurting his son was to warn him against educating his son. Later on, Satchel's victory over the white team becomes a great victory for himself.Because of its length, however, I'm not sure how I could use it in the classroom. But, I'll keep thinking about it.

My Grandson loves this book!!

Graphic novel biographies are touch-and-go affairs. For example, Houdini: The Handcuff King by Jason Lutes and Nick Bertozzi did little for me. I could see what the creators were trying to do, but taking a single selection out of Houdini's life and then making it directly into a comic book without any flashbacks, cuts, or original takes on his life... well, what's the point really? If you can't get creative with your subject when you're making a graphic novel out of their life then you may as well just create a plain old piece of non-fiction and be done with it. You need to do something to deserve your graphic format. In this way, Lutes and Bertozzi could take a page out of the book of James Sturm and Rich Tommaso, then. "Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow" can't be called anything but entirely thrilling. By telling Paige's stories through another man's eyes, the reader is given a fuller understanding of the times in which blacks lived during the height of Jim Crow. A graphic novel bio done right.Our unnamed hero decides in 1929 to support his family by becoming a professional baseball player. It might have worked out too had he not played early on against the great Satchel Paige and busted his knee. Now he works as a sharecropper in the deep South and times are hard. His son is beaten by the white landowners for going to school rather than working their fields and there's little to be done about it. Then, one day, Satchel Paige is advertised as coming to play the local white baseball team and everyone turns out. At first Paige doesn't show and the game grows tense. Yet by the end of the day Paige's eventual presence causes an outpouring of support from all sides and colors. In the midst of all this, the narrator decides to finally tell his son about his baseball days and remind his child that he still has options.The idea of placing Paige within the context of his times by narrating through someone else is inspired and probably why the book works as well as it does. The fictional sharecropper who tells his own story first and how Paige intersected with it second, is a great character because you can feel the reality of his situation. The danger of writing any book for children that discusses Jim Crow is that your author is going to dumb down the material. Make light of the horror of the time, even. Sturm is very clever in this respect. He drills home both the constant threat of violence present at the time alongside the beating down of the spirit. When the sharecropper's son goes to school instead of helping in the fields a horrific segment brings these horrors together. As for illustrator Rich Tommaso, he doesn't have to show any more that the simplest of images to complement these moments. You might hear about a "cotton sack tied around his head. Blood leakin' through the sack," but the next panels are just of the boy's mother boiling water quietly and carefully. Against this backdrop, Paige's appearance is as welcome to the characters as it is the readers. And a book that can elicit a direct connection between character and reader has done its job and done it well.Baseball, it seems, is the sport with the best narrative potential. Now I don't mean to belittle football, basketball, or any of those other nice games, but in baseball you've a constant heightening of narrative tension. That's why stories about baseball players work so well. When you see those nasty Jennings brothers out there facing Satchel Paige, you want nothing short of blood. In lieu of blood, strikeouts will have to do, and boy do they ever! Even kids unfamiliar or uninterested in the game itself will be drawn deeply into Sturm and Tommaso's recaps. I suppose that for a kid reading this book there might be some mild confusion over whether or not we're supposed to root for Paige initially. After all, our narrator does bust his knee in the process of playing against Paige. Still, the spirit of competition should never be confused with good vs. evil. The book makes that much apparent.It's clear that ample research was done on this book, particularly when you consider the authenticity of the narrator's life. The back of the book is filled too with "Panel Discussions" which lift select images from the book's panels and give a little historical background to things like the African American press, barnstorming, and lynching, to name but a few. The rest of the book just feels right. Not like a current author trying to shoehorn himself into a historical record, but like the words were tripping out of the narrator's mouth directly into your ear. With its misleadingly simple images and deep vein of authenticity, "Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow" comes across as a biography of necessity. It's not a replacement for those other bios with their focus centered squarely on the hero in question, but rather as a perfect complement. Anyone can learn a fact or two about Satchel Paige. How much rarer it is to feel firsthand why it is that people considered his existence extraordinary. Beautiful, harsh, and real.

This is a wonderful book, with historical depth, humor, suspense, tragedy, and sensitivity. The author and illustrator really provide insight into the psychology of segregation. My son and I both enjoyed it, and the mentions of many sad truths about the Jim Crow years in context (detailed in the fantastic endnotes) provide a jumping off point for serious discussion. Due to the violence portrayed, I'd recommend this book for ages 9 and up.

If you're looking for a Satchel Paige biography, this book might not be for you. If you want to read a story which paints a poignant picture of the times in which he lived, and what he meant to the people of his generation, by all means treat yourself this extremely well-written graphic novel.

All the press and blurbs I had read regarding this graphic novel led me to believe it was a biography of the great negro-league and major-league pitcher Satchel Paige. Even the back cover implies this. Instead, it's a story of how Satchel's performance at a 1944 "white vs. black" exhibition game gives inspiration to a former negro-league player and his son who live in the Jim Crow-era south. Unfortunately, this particular part of the story only makes up the last half of the book, and it would have been even less if the pages were not filled with depictions of every agonizing ritual, rhythm, pitch, and swing of a baseball game.The introduction is the only part of this book that tells you anything about Satchel Paige's life, and while he does figure into the main character's fate and the conclusion of the story, his actual involvement throughout is minor. I'm not saying that this book is horrible - the short chapters, in and of themselves, are interesting, and there is an overall message here, but the point could have been made using fewer pages and without the blaring emphasis on Paige. I would appreciate it if the publishers would be more forthcoming with the focus of their books in the future.
