Review

"Maihack's debut graphic novel sets the stage for what looks to be a series of Star Trek-style space adventures punctuated with far-future high school drama. Cleopatra smoothly slips into the role of confident, wisecracking, baddie-dispatching hero." -Publishers Weekly"Cleo's mentor, a historian cat, is one of the best sidekicks around, and the imaginative content . . . and flow of Maihack's panels is a delight, with its exciting layout of a futuristic Egypt complete with cool pyramid skyscrapers." -Booklist"Cleo's novel surroundings - which include talking cats, ray guns and even a flying sphinx - feel fresh and immediate." -Kirkus

My 10-year-old was immediately interested in this book. We gave it to her for Christmas and by the end of the day she had already read it and was asking for more. This is a graphic novel format. Good book!

Excellent book for children aged 7-12Review from a 10 YEAR OLD avid reader of graphic novels:I like this book because it was really good and interesting and i think it was an amazing book to read. There was lots of action and fighting and time travel. I didn't pick 5 stars because there were some parts in the book were i couldn't understand parts and some parts were weird which could be kinda interesting. So i really really LIKE the book. You should read it one day and find out how amazing this book really is. CLEOPATRA in space is one of my favorite books in the world. I want to be helpful to whoever is thinking about buying this book. And here is one option YES.If you read this book already please be sure to share your thoughts and ideas with other people so you can share how wonderful of a book this is. So take your time and think right now if you are interested in getting this book. Hope you like it or even love it. Bye.

This story is clever about a very young 1st century Cleopatra being projected into the future to save the world from the bad people who destroyed all historical electronic data. Fortunately one guy realized this could happen so started saving paper copies of histories of nations/planets. The story is a very timely cyber-war introduction! The story touches on 1) Cleopatra being a heroine/savior, 2) girls liking boys and vice versa 3) the heroine's preference for combat training versus high school subjects like algebra.Unfortunately, I didn't find the wholesomeness I would expect from a book that Scholastic carries. But there also wasn't anything outwardly offensive.Since I bought it, I will send this one to my 8 year-old granddaughter and, if she likes it, I'll look into getting Book Two which is a continuation of the story. This comic might be good for encouraging reading -- some pages have only a few words and some more advanced words are introduced, providing opportunities for "aside learning" if an older person is present in the reading.A last thought on the art - the colors are muted tones - a bit dark.

My daughter has had trouble with her reading skills. She's 10 and reads at about a second grade level. This comic has been great because the subject matter appeals to her age group without being too hard for her to read. There are not many words on each page, so she gets to turn pages quickly and feel like she's making lots of progress. There are also some challenging words, but they aren't so hard that they are discouraging. My son (8, and with a much higher reading level than my daughter) has also taken an interest in this book. He likes comic books anyway and has been reading Dogman avidly. I really like that the protagonist is female, but her character and the setting can appeal to both boys and girls.

I loved this book. Cleopatra is transported from Egypt to the future and to the planet Mayet. There she is recognized as the savior, there to defeat the evil dictator whose is conquering civilizations. But even in the future, Cleo has to go to school and deal with friendship issues. The artwork is beautiful, and the cinematic flair brings the action to life. Cleo is a strong, fearless heroine that girls can look up to.If you are interested in Egypt at all, this is the book for you. it is fun, exciting and I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

My daughter adores this book and Mike Maihack's other works. For those who are looking for a kid friendly book that isn't simplistic, has great art, interesting and rich characters... this is the comic book for you. I grew up a traditional Marvel/DC comic book nerd, and I've given my daughter a few of my old ones. But stories like Cleopatra in Space just weren't being told when I was a kid.Get every book in this series, please make lots more Mike!

Cleopatra in Space is a great comic with a terrific lead character, story line, and supporting group of characters. My only gripe is that with every passing page I knew that the end of the book was closer and closer. This is the kind of book that I wish were an online comic: I would read it all the time. Heck, I'd even pay to subscribe! (Hint, hint, Mike Maihack.)Another thing I like about CIS is that Cleopatra herself is interesting and well-written enough to appeal to most young (8-12) readers. That's a bonus for me because I am always looking to put books in students hands in order to encourage reading. That said, I look forward to the first Cleopatra in Space movie.

The art is delightful. It has that same sense of fun and innocence that I associate with Pokemon. The Egyptian theme was what attracted me to the story. Combining that with a retro-futuristic world makes for great eye candy.I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I discovered Mike Maihack from his work on the beautiful "Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule!" card game. I purchased this ostensibly to give to my son for his 8th birthday but secretly I just wanted to read it for myself. I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed one bit. It's all too rare to find exciting, imaginative, non-superhero, family-friendly comics. Oh, they're out there of course, but certainly not enough of them. Eagerly looking forward to the next volume!
