Review

“The unlikely, and happy marriage of Charles Darwin and Emma Wedgewood comes to life in Heiligman's intelligent and fast-moving book. Emma, a devout Christian but a sympathetic editor, helped make the arguments in ‘On the Origin of Species' airtight. Meanwhile readers can almost effortlessly absorb Darwin's ideas and the culture in which they developed, along with a portrait of Victorian everyday life.” ―New York Times Book Review, 2009 Notable Book“With empathy, humor and insight, Heiligman proves the truth of the maxim that behind every great man there is indeed a great woman. There have been many Darwin-themed books published this year (which marks the 200th anniversary of his birth). This is clearly the best.” ―NPR.org“A delightful book about the question at the heart of the Darwins' marriage.” ―The New York Times Book Review“Heiligman's writing is so good--so rooted in particulars of time, place and Darwin's scientific thought, yet so light and full of drama--that readers will care about Charles and Emma and their love story. The debate between science and religion continues, today, but the relationship of Charles and Emma Darwin demonstrates that science and religion are not incompatible.” ―Bookpage“This is the ‘wow' biography on the Darwins - meticulously researched, richly rendered and rewarding every step of the way.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“Heiligman conveys the social order of the day, the comfort religion provided and even, yes, the evolution of Darwin's thoughts.” ―The Washington Post Book World“There's an extraordinary sense of how persistent and vigorous Darwin's scientific thought was, and of what an unusually loving and involved parent and husband he was...Great for young readers to watch scientific work as a personal project.” ―The Chicago Tribune“Allows readers not only to understand Darwin's ideas, but to appreciate how Emma's responses tempered them.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review“Heiligman has created a unique, flowing, and meticulously researched picture of the controversial scientist and the effect of his marriage on his life and work.” ―School Library Journal, starred review“Here is a timely, relevant book that works on several levels: as a history of science, as a biography, and, last but not least, as a romance.” ―Horn Book, starred review“This intersection between religion and science is where the book shines, but it is also an excellent portrait of what life was like during the Victorian era, a time when illness and death were ever present, and, in a way, a real-time example of the survival of the fittest.” ―Booklist, starred review“Come for the science, stay for the love story” ―BCCB, starred review“This rich, insightful portrait of Charles and Emma Darwin's marriage explores a dimension of the naturalist's life that has heretofore been largely ignored...readers wanting to know more will discover two brilliant thinkers whose marital dialectic will provide rich fodder for discussions of science and faith.” ―Kirkus Reviews“A unique blend of romance, scientific observations, explanations of medical practices prevalent in the earlynineteenth century, and opportunities to examine scientific discoveries and religious beliefs in detail.” ―VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates)“The conflicts between science and religion are daunting subjects, but Deborah Heiligman's beautiful book Charles and Emma unravels all the complexity through the lives of two remarkable people. At its heart, "Charles and Emma" is a love story--but it is amazing how much you learn by the time you finish. I enjoyed every page.” ―Professor Ari L. Goldman, Columbia University, author of "The Search for God at Harvard."“Not only among the very best [Darwin biographies], but it provides something new, which is quite an achievement in such a crowded field.” ―John Bonner, Professor Emeritus, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University“It is magnificent and will be a much loved and read book by many people.” ―Rosemary Grant, Senior Research Biologist, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University“I loved the book and feel strongly that it should be marketed to readers of many ages and not restricted to students.” ―Mary Lou Gleason, New York Academy of Sciences

Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith by Deborah Heiligman is exceptional. As a fan of science writing, biography, historical settings, and young adult literature, I felt like Charles and Emma was written just for me. The religious issues along with the romantic aspects brought drama to what might have otherwise been a traditional biography. The religious and romantic elements might also move some fiction readers toward nonfiction. Many adult biographies can be academic and dry, so I enjoyed the simple language, conversational style, and topical emphasis of this book written for young adults. I don't normally think of biographies as "page turners," but the story was a really "quick read."Heiligman wove interesting primary source materials and stories into the book. I particularly enjoyed the "to marry" and "no to marry" list. I could relate to this very analytical approach. I could also connect to his obsession with "knowing everything" about a particular topic such as his species studies.Combining the stories of Charles and Emma made the book unique. As I read the story I wondered about the impact of spouses on other scientists. I'd like to see other books taking this approach to biography. So much of YA literature focuses on realistic fiction (teen angst and melodrama) and fantasy (vampires, werewolves, dystopia) that it's great to see a book written for nerdy teens like I was! In publisher's quest for "high profit" books, they often forget that there's a market for engaging biographies, readable nonfiction, and quality storytelling outside traditional fiction categories. This book will never get the readership of the Twilight series, but there are teens in the world that aspire to be naturalists, scientists, and scholars that are thirsty for books like this. One sign of an exceptional book is the degree to which I think about the book later. Darwin seems to be everywhere I look. Darwin's 200th birthday was Feb 12 2010.I've always respected Charles Darwin for the many years he spent researching and reflecting on his theories before publishing. He truly wanted to "get it right." His approach to science and the development of arguments is a great example of critical thinking. There are some great websites devoted to his work. You can also visit Darwin's countryside on Google Earth. For a great overview with images go to http://www.darwinday.org/learn/Want to learn more? Go to http://www.darwinday.org/Beyond the book...I think it's important to introduce biography and Charles Darwin to children. For younger readers, I'd suggest the beautifully illustrated picture book "One Beetle Too Many: The Extraordinary Adventures of Charles Darwin" by Kathryn Lasky as a great introduction to Charles Darwin. For teens who enjoy this book, I'd recommend moving into quality adult nonfiction such as Erick Larson's The Devil in the White City, Isaac's Storm, or Thunderstruck.I enjoy reading about naturalists from the 1500s through the 1900s. For an engaging biography that takes place in the late 1600s, read "A Pirate of Exquisite Mind: Explorer, Naturalist, and Buccaneer: The Life of William Dampier" by Diana Preston. The biographies of Linda Lear would be a great way to introduce young adults scholars to adult literature. Read Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature or Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature.Okay, so now you know I'm a nerd. We need more nerds in the world!

I used this book to teach evolution to my 8th grade science students. You'd be surprised at how capable 8th graders can be of having respectful discussion on this topic! It allows students with or without religious convictions to address their concerns by talking about how Charles Darwin did so. They were also able to think about how to relate to people on both sides of the debate by exploring Charles's respect for his wife Emma (and her support of him despite her disagreements). Our socratic seminar on the themes in this book allowed us to start our unit on evolution with an open mind and with an understanding of (and respect for) different viewpoints. The author also has a theater version of the book on her website, which was perfect for differentiation for english language learners or reading disabilities.

This is based mainly on the Darwin family's correspondence so it's easy to believe it's accurate. I have read several books about Darwin, along with trying to slog through his actual book Origin of Species which is really tough going. The book adds detail to other facts about Darwin found in other books. It especially discusses the complication caused by Emma's belief in heaven and Darwin's struggle with that. Interesting fact: They had ten children, seven of whom survived, and Emma had her last child when she was 48 years old. However, they had an astonishing number of household employees, so Emma was not exactly doing laundry and cooking for the family. Great read!

Picked for a book club read, not realizing it was geared toward a younger audience. Several of us really enjoyed it, though we all found the writing style very simple (just right to include the younger audience.) You get to know Darwin as "Charles", a husband and father, a human being in the context of a family; and are charmed and touched by his relationship with them. And the story of how his discoveries effected his beliefs and thus his relationships with those he loved most, keeps you enthralled, especially for people who have experienced the effects of differences in belief in their personal relationships with those they love, who have the context of the full depth of their emotions to draw from when they are only hinted at in the book. It follows the story of his relationship with Emma and family life from it's start to the ends of their lives, and his scientific work in the context of his daily life with his family. Simple and understated, drawing the picture from the historical sources, some in our book club longed for more, and it certainly could have been made more exciting as historical fiction, where you could have gotten inside their heads a bit more, but I find a beauty in the story told as simply as it was. When differences in belief so often spark contention that tears people apart, I found this a beautiful story of triumph of love for our fellow beings, in a striking place: one of the first couples to have felt the impact of the theory of evolution.I came away with greater respect for Darwin most deeply because of this one thing: his care and respect for the feelings of those whose religious devotion was disturbed by his theories. When after his death, Emma edited out certain passages of his personal writings, which were not intended by him to go public, because she said she thought people would take them the wrong way, at first you may think she is trying to clean up what she doesn't agree with. But I get the feeling from what you learn about the two, that more likely she knew that Charles didn't like offending and hurting people, and was more likely to withhold a thought of his that might be taken as being disrespectful or in mean spirit to others who held contradictory cherished beliefs. Not that he didn't feel justified in his beliefs, but that he would take the utmost care that others would not perceive the slightest mean spirit or disrespect in his intent. One thing that struck me was how being part of a distinctly upper class, the life Darwin led that enabled him to devote his time to his studies, was surely starkly different than the lives and constraints of those in the working and poorer classes. While this was not a theme brought out at all in the book (appropriately, as this was not the scope of the book), I couldn't help become aware of it while reading the account of what his daily life and home was like.Seeing Darwin's studies in the context of his home life, and ordinary daily musings and observations of the things around him, can also be a great model for the young scientists among us.

Using the rental section of Amazon has sure saved me tons, I mean tons of money for my college child. I am widow and was worried about how I was going to buy those expensive books, then I learned about RENTING. This is a great

I used this book for a costume history class, it was very helpful, but I couldn't take it to class with me at risk of it falling apart. The front cover looks like it is going to fall off. The 30-40 pages or so have water damage so they are wavy and bumpy. When I ordered it, I think it said Used- LIke New or in Good condition, but they may have been hyping it up a bit much. Most of the pages after the 40 page mark and on are perfect, though so the book is definitely still usable. I added video of just the first few pages that have water damage so they are stuck together, and the photos show how the pages are separating from the cover.

I love this book, I use it as my teaching source for my Fashion History class in our theatre and film department. I wish I had known about it in time to get the instructors version through school. It has a good vocabulary section for fashion terminology and my students appreciate the references from historical time periods that influenced contemporary fashion pieces. The context of fashion as human history works well to engage budding directors and designers in seeing clothing as the extension of characters within any particular time period. I wish I had access to more of the interactive materials.

This book is an excellent and detailed source on costumes through the ages. Not sure why the others reviews are a bit harsh on it, but I am more than pleased. I don't find it so awful in that it lacks bunches of colorful prints- heck, if all the drawings were colorized this book would be a very expensive resource.I'm a simple person, and I'm very pleased with the entire book.

I thought it was “necessary” to upgrade from the pink-covered version +/- 2005. The layout is clearer and some of the images are better. That’s really it and I would’ve been fine with my older version.

A lot missing paper and pictures

Rented this for a class and it came in perfectly acceptable used condition and it's pretty informative although it glosses over some pretty influential periods in fashion history or combined many decades into a single chapter of information.

There is no comparison with any book out there. If you are a costumer, reenactor, or history buff you should have this on your shelf, period.

200 Crochet Blocks is a good book, but a not so good collection of patterns.I have owned and enjoyed the companion book, 200 Ripple Stich Patterns, by the same author, and it is excellent. I was excited to find 200 Blocks, but have been somewhat disappointed. The book is a collection of individual crochet block patterns, suggested pairings of those blocks, and directions on how to use the patterns to assemble custom projects. The patterns themselves are sound and following the pattern will indeed produce the desired block. However, most of them are blocks I would never care to make. There are quite a few that are basically just swatches, and some of them look dated to me. Out of the 200 patterns, I will probably only ever use 5. I can find dozens of block patterns that I like with a simple google search. If you’re going to buy one crochet pattern book you should buy 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns and skip this one.

The reason that I gave this book four stars instead of a much lower rating is that so far, all my blocks have turned out exactly the same size, and I do mean exactly. They are not precisely square, but that just means that I must orient them all the same direction when joining them for my finished piece (which is large, and I will probably complete most of the blocks worth doing in the process). This is true even though I have not used the same yarn, but very similar yarn, for the different blocks. The other thing I like is that there are a nice variety of blocks, including many very lovely ones, whether you like flowers, texture, lace-like patterns (sturdy enough for an afghan, not the fragile, complicated lace designs), bobbles, or granny squares. Now for the bad: Interweave Press is very good about posting corrections to patterns on their website and keeping them there long enough so that you can still access them if the book is old, but they only do it when someone points out an error, and that means that someone who is experienced has to do every block. Stitch diagrams or stitch counts would have helped a great deal with this. Also, as someone else pointed out, for many of the blocks they give four color schemes and count those as four different patterns. That is really stretching it, since apparently I have invented a host of new blocks, as I used my own color scheme. Just as bad is the number of blocks that are just single crochet all the way, but they have a row or two in a different color. Change the number of rows that are a different color, or change their position within the block (near the bottom instead of near the top), and they count each of those as new patterns. (They do the same thing with bobbles.) A better book would be one with just 50 patterns, each with diagrams and stitch counts, and checked for accuracy, and if all blocks were designed to be the same size, it would be a classic for all time. (And they should show as many of those blocks as possible on the front cover, as their cover choice has little eye appeal.)

This is a beautiful and unusual book. It offers about 127 different block patterns, some worked in rows, others worked in rounds, plus a wealth of suggestions about how to combine these block patterns into larger pieces (afghans, shawls, etc.) with a very modern, "non-granny" style. It has heightened my sense of what Eaton calls "color ways," combinations of colors within a block and combos of blocks in a larger piece. She offers 12 complete afghan patterns, but the real value of the book lies in its usefulness to a crocheter who wants to imagine and create unique and personal pieces of work. A different and wonderful addition to my crochet library! (I subtracted one star because of the various errors in the instructions, pointed out by other reviewers, which need to be corrected by looking up the publishers website.)

I LOVE this book. They have a wide assortment of different types of Granny squares which are all 6 inch in size so you can mix and match at will. They have guides for helping you choose different color combos and help with choosing styles that go well together. I am about to start my first blanke5 and I will let you on9w how it goes. Definitely a good buy!

I've crocheted for 45+ years and made just about everything you can crochet - from clothing to home decor to decorations - and always on the lookout for patterns to inspire and make. This book is excellent on a couple of levels - the variety of patterns and ideas for putting them together, the instructions on making stitches is solid and easy to follow, good for everyone from beginners to the experienced crocheter looking for more of a challenge. A good pattern book should not only give you the basics and some projects to follow, but also fire your own imagination to use their ideas as a jumping off point to make your own creations and this book does both. If you know a crocheter, or someone thinking of trying their hand at this craft, this is a book they will treasure.

Written very oddly... i am advanced crocheter and .. this is impossible to follow!!!! Good thing I can wing it with just looking at photos. DO NOT BUY!!

This book is beautiful to look at, but the instructions are very poor and confusing. My first square worked out just fine, but it was a simple one. (# 52?) The more difficult squares which are harder to intuit have confusing directions and I tried three blocks three times each and could not make them come out like the picutures and was confused by the directions when actually putting hook to yarn. Dangit! Also, the two blocks I tried successfully are not the same size. The pros are that the pictures are good and she shows several blocks in different colors. She also shows several projects and different ways to put together various shapes of blocks. Her use of color is lovely IMO.Just such a disappointment not to be able to create some of my favorite blocks because the directions are so poor. I will stick to books with charts from now on. This is such a let-down!
