What can I say? It’s another Drizzt novel so of course it’s gonna be packed with action and adventure. This book reintroduces the Drow(dark elves) back into the mix after Drizzt and his companions go through their journey from Icewind Dale, all the way down to Mithral Hall and establish they home there. Drizzt is of course faced with difficult decisions and tested relentlessly by arch nemesis and some unexpected family. All and all it’s a fun book and really delivers the action in this one.

This is not my first time reading the Drizzt series but the adventures of the drow elf and his companions has enraptured me since I was a young man. I have read this series many times over my 2 1/2 decades of life and I never tire of the story itself. It is so masterfully written that I can actually see this book playing out in my head as if on a television screen and I get so caught up in the battles that to this day I still cheer out loud when Artemis is foiled again or one of the gang puts down a ferocious monster... If I had to recommend any series in my life it would be this one as not only is it a great story it is also a very creative way of teaching Honor, Integrity, Strength and the belief that anything is possible if you have the heart to go for it.

The Legacy marks Drizzt's return to the underworld and recontact with the Drow. There is a great deal of fighting and maneuvering in the tunnels and caverns between Mithral Hall and Menzoberranzan and the book winds up 2 or 3 of the threads in the plot that have been developed so far.

Is the barbarian at such an early age actually lost to the Companions of the Hall & is Ontari finally dead? Can Regis finally rest knowing that he has at long last seen the last of him. What lies in their future. Will Drizzt finally win Catti-Bri's love?

Excellent Fantasy Novel (Excellent Series! One of the best!). Good for all ages. The adult content is there, but in a respectful way that would be mostly unnoticed by children unless they had the imagination to fill in the gaps already. The action is excellent. The story and characters are deep. The lessons are spectacular. Just great. The Legend of Drizzt Books I through VI are obviously finding their rythm, but VII and beyond are great. Especially VII (The Legacy).

Being the seventh book in the series I was not expecting as many earth shattering moments as I found in this one. There is a pace that develops in a series where you know the main heroes will face danger but will some how make it through relatively unscathed in the end. R. A. Salvatore reveals that is not the case for Drittz and his friends that every dangerous turn they face could be their last.

Thanks to my friend Sammy from a long time ago when I was in high school for giving me this book series to read. I hated reading because it always reminded me of school, but this book series really captured my attention and the possibility of imagination. I was so enamored by this series that I bought the entire collection at the time it was only like 12 books and read them continuously until the next book came out. I had to have read these at least 5 times already, but since the story is so good and the series is so long that by the time I get to reading the first book again it almost seems new to me, or at the very least watching an old favorite movie in my mind.

Like always, Salvatore delivers another great tale, this one a little darker than previous ones. There is a huge surprise in the book that I did not see coming, and expertly sets up some really amazing character development for future books.

Lo compré hoy a las 10am, lo termine hoy a la 1pm. Volveré a leerlo.

I had previously found o a commented copy of this book what I found extremely boring. Then I found this copy and I loved it as it makes a lot easier to follow the author ideas whithout third party opinions. Advise you find here is useful for most any areas of one's life.

Absolutamente recomendable.Se puede terminar en una misma tarde.

but gives better understanding. So, with the two, you get a good picture of how important it is to understanding how the horse's body works. Now, if only people would understand that horses are NOT human and don't learn like humans do. I hear again and again folks attributing human traits to horses, such as envy, hate, scheming mischief, etc. Such gross misinterpretations don't help in the training/riding arena!

Finally someone who comes with evidence that modern dressage has gone off track, and NOT for the good of the horse...Dr. Heuschmann (veterinarian)explains the anatomy of the horse and compares classical dressage with modern dressage. He shows how common exercises in modern dressage (even often seen on high competition level!)are not only stressful for the horse's body, but will even damage the horse if trained this way for longer period...Since there are a lot wrong ideas in the dressage world nowadays (also in horse sports that have their basics in dressage) this book is not only helpful for riders butVERY helpful for the key figures in our sports: judges, trainers, instructors...And not only beginners but MOSTLY experienced horse people...are you brave enough to question yourself??

Just bought my second copy to give to a friend. A well written book with great pictures. A must must read for every horseback rider. Dressage, reining, barrel racing, jumping... doesn't matter!

This book gives insightful information on how the horse is impacted by the rider/ training it receives. The author who rode to the highest levels, passed the difficult German instructor certification prior to becoming a veterinarian was motivated to find out why horses were becoming unsound. This book explains his findings.

For a good few years a slow but noticeable aversion has spread over certain "modern" training methods. What is this about? Why? "Modern" usually means "surpassed by ancient". "Classical" dressage therefore, may prompt associations with baroque riding, the Wiener Hofreitschule and definitely not with todays mainstream equestrian sport. Nothing could be further from the truth, is what this book clearly advocates.Indeed we have swerved a long way from patient, animal friendly expectations of our horses on whom we should feel priveleged of mounting and enjoying every step of a well planned and executed training programme. I first came into contact with the author, a leading German equine veterinary doctor, at a convention in Ireland, where I saw first hand how the amazing 3D animations of the horse's muscoskeletal system would illustrate it's natural and man-induced unnatural movement as discussed on the DVD. The result is amazing and should ideally be seen in conjunction with the book. At last a bright light is shed on the discussions about dressage training methods, the foundation of all equestrian disciplines. A discussion that really shouldn't be "A Tug of War", let alone subject of a modern training principle.Mind you all: the book and DVD are not amusing at all. Instead, they clearly and clinically illustrate todays alarming techniques and appalling performance and clinical results that have found their way into equestrianism and are supposed to rapidly train horses towards an outline that dressage judges seem to prefer and admire, having little eye for the resulting clear irregularities in the horse's balance and gaits. The sheer fact that this "modern" way of riding has become more of a rule than an exception, makes it a method and is indeed widely adopted, to the dismay of equine veterinary author Gerd Heuschmann.Perhaps, just maybe, the world's best can practice these training methods safely. But the vast majority of riders and trainers copies them, unwillingly without empathy, without patience and with little or no understanding, repeatedly damaging horses limbs and spine, expecting them to reach a very high level of competence in dressage at an age of only five or just over. Today it is about the quick resale value of the horse, about the glory of the rider, quick fixes seemingly supported by "modern" training techniques. Low and round carriage of the horse's neck and head during training are seen as proof of submission and an advanced level of competence. Wide spread stupidity and ignorance of riders and trainers and on many occasions a staggering incompetence of dressage judges around the globe is causing massive and wide spread harm to horses' physique. I see it live, every day, with my own eyes. It is heart wrenching. If horses could speak, there wouldn't be so many "mysterious" lamenesses. If horses could speak they would tell us it's a rider induced tension in their back that makes them walk choppy, not an ailment located in the lower leg. Or indeed pain in a limb caused by a forced way of going. Never mind expensive scientifically proven joint supplements, state-of-the art stable and field blankets, flashy bridleware, designer clothes and impeccably white training wraps. Start thinking all over again: If horses could speak, they would shout at us as by now we are wearing them out prematurely. But they don't.A radical change in expectations versus time has to be readopted, as used to generally be the case only half a century ago and as it still is commonsense among a few trainers and renowned equestrian centres. A durable result and continuous health, performance and happiness of a horse can only be realised by reevaluating our training, judging methods and understanding of quality of the horses' gaits. All persons involved in dressage and basic flatwork training, riding and judging should be aware of the thorough scientific evidence that is so clearly explained in the book and shown on the DVD. The equestrian world is very much on the wrong track not having signalled and halted these wide spread practices, bar some individuals and organisations. Horses would have told us that a long time ago. If they could speak. Now this invaluable pair of a book and DVD speaks for them, and for those early warriors for the good cause, who have had trouble getting their message across to the equestrian community which is mostly not aware of how far todays training techniques have swerved away from the patient, efficient and empathic "classical" dressage.Without such a clear description of the balance, biomechanics and "modern" training methods, horses seem to be doomed to let us carry on without us understanding basic principles that are so graphically illustrated in this valuable pair of a book and a DVD. Watch, read, act and spread the word and we will be worth the glory we work towards. The glory of the combined performance of truly good training and the amazing willingness and ability of our horses.Worth five stars as six are not an option.Accompanying DVD strongly recommended: DVD: If Horses Could Speak: How Incorrect "Modern" Riding Negatively Affects Horses' Health

I rode huntseat/foxhunt for twenty-some years as a young adult. At age 60, retirement allowed me to pick it up again. However, soon after I came to a serious decision point whether to continue riding. Regardless of the horse I rode, they tripped, misbehaved or were dull to the aids. It was shortly after that I met a wonderful horse physio-therapist/dressage instructor who analyzed two of my horses. A long story short, she pointed out aspects of my riding which were impacting the horse. My riding immediately improved. No more tripping and naughtiness; no more setting my horse up to ignore the aids. I purchased this book as the result of following up on some of the points she made. I took it to the barn and she recognized it on sight, exclaiming "An excellent book, too bad more instructors don't read it! I used these principles with you and your horses." So, two reviews in one; one from the practioner and one from the student. Buy it, your horse will love you for it.

Excellent book - I have passed this one around to my friends and my trainer, all enjoyed it and felt like it really gets a lot of information across, clearly and concisely. A great read for those who want to learn about dressage and believe that short cuts are not the best way to achieve success in training.

I have always cringed when I heard of or seen horses ridden under the influence of rollkur, but never had a scientific basis for that distaste. Now I do, and I can use the author's drawings and discussion of anatomy to back up my aversion. This book is a benefit to anyone trying to evaluate their training method: rather than comparing one trainer's word to another's, you have the actual facts to make your decision. Everyone should have this book in their horsemanship library. And listen to it.

THE AWEN ALONE was a really thoughtful little book about solitary druidism. I really enjoyed it. Perhaps what struck me most (besides the author's careful and elegant tone) was that she is committed not only to helping the environment, but other people. She encourages a conscientious lifestyle that I so rarely see in Pagan books these days (which are self-indulgent to the point of narcissism anymore). As an introduction piece, there is the expected chapters on both ritual and holy days that are part of every pagan book, but THE AWEN ALONE provides enough original, thoughtful material that the experienced pagan shouldn't mind. This was a great introduction to druidism, and it made me curious to explore the faith further. This was a truly successful entry into the Pagan Portal series, and I hope to read more from Joanna van der Hoeven in the future.

I am deeply appreciative of Joanna van der Hoeven's book. After reading a great deal on line about Druidry, I wanted to learn more. I was drawn to this book because (a) the concept of Awen is what most attracts me to the Druid path over other branches of paganism, and (b) I have a personal aversion to organized religion and wanted the opportunity to explore alone rather than depending on finding a group that may or may not align with what I want out of this experience. At first I was a little put off by the introduction in which the author describes a regular day for her which felt wholly removed from the realities of my life. But as I continued to read, I found that van der Hoeven gives incredible space for following Druidry according to the realities of one's life and the parts that may or may not resonate with an individual. She offers practices as tools instead of requirements, while still specifying what might be considered the identifying characteristics of Druidry. It was very much what I'd hoped to find and is refreshingly different from another text on solitary Druidry (a much more prescriptive, formal, and theistic take on Druidry than Awen Alone presents) that I am currently reading. I'd recommend this book to people who, like me, shy away from organized religion and want the freedom to explore whatever resonates with you. The only drawback for me is that I wanted more text. It seemed as though the surface of Druidry was only being brushed.

I gave this book 5 stars simply for the fact that it is so genuinely free of preaching and dogma and focuses so heavily on what you make of druidry in itself. My only regret while reading this was that it eventually ended, and I was left with an unusual desire to live as the author does. I hope to one day meet Joanna van der Hoeven and shake her hand, perhaps discuss druidry in depth. Overall, if I could have given the book 10 stars, or 100 I would have. But sadly, there were only 5, hehe

The Awen Alone is a beautiful and exemplary tool-set for those looking to practice Druidry on their own or researching the path. As with most "beginner" books, this book covers many of the topics you'd expect to see. There is a bit about the history of Druids, the Eight-fold Year, Gods/Divinity, Ancestors, and how the Earth plays a part in the path. All of this information is well researched and written. A complete novice will find it to be quite comprehensive. There are even some tidbits or metaphors that could prove to be most useful to someone who has been walking Druidry for many years. But really, this book shines in all the parts that go beyond giving out standard information. The author does a wonderful job opening doors to the many ways one might enrich their Druid path without ever pushing readers to do, think, or feel a particular way about something. I especially enjoyed the way ethics were addressed. Ethics did not have its own chapter or specific set of rules. Instead, there were delicious moments that helped to reinforce the tenants of Druidry that guide a person to live a truthful and honorable life.I've come away from reading this book feeling a bit more inspired about my path and am eagerly going to put some of its ideas into practice!

It took a while to arrive, however it was in perfect condition when it did. This is my first time reading this author. She is very down to earth, and sensible. I really enjoyed this book, and I will be ordering another of her books shortly. If you are a solitary practitioner like myself, I reccomend giving this book a try.

Good little book for solo practice. I liked the focus on how to be a modern Druid and the practical aspects of meditations and prayers included. The historical detail was also very well written and interesting. I think I will return to this book to help inform my practice.

I felt this was a good guide to following a solitary practice of Druidry. There was no preachiness or pushiness in this, like I'd encountered in other books. In my opinion, Joanna Van Der Hoeven presented great guidelines for forging a path and worshipping the way one wants. No two people can experience their spirituality the same; the author takes this into account. I will be using this book as a guide as I continue to learn more.

Well written with good allusions to and descriptions of nature. Good loose guide for people who do not want to follow a formal or someone else's way of Druidry.

This book is “genius” on a number of fronts. The first is the writing itself. There isn’t any. With little narrative support the book is entirely made up of individual quotations grouped and stacked around the story of one Silicon Valley venture or another. At first this gives the impression that the author played more the role of researcher and curator than traditional author. And then it hits you. Fisher, in choosing the quotes and stacking them as if they represent the conversations taking place at a group therapy session, is creating the narrative through context. And that is both ground breaking and ingenious—and that makes it a perfect way to tell the story of Silicon Valley.By the end of the book, in fact, the individuality of the speakers begins to fade away and it begins to read like a traditional narrative. Although, journalistic to the end, the citations are never compromised. Brilliant writing, to be sure, on a par with the brilliance he writes about. The stories are fascinating and there is little question that there is an abundance of genius on display here, or that technology really has changed the world. But did the people portrayed here drive the change or were they propelled along by it? The same can be asked of Napoleon, or Thomas Jefferson, or take your pick. The answer, of course, is a little of both, but there is always a tendency to over-personalize larger historical trends that are far more complex than that. And I believe the choice of writing style may have been a tacit recognition of that on Fisher’s part. Individual to history to individual and back again. It’s powerful stuff from a purely literary perspective. The Buddhists refer to “dependent origination”, the idea that nothing exists in isolation. We can understand many aspects of reality but can never know it completely, meaning that all reality must be interpreted in context and is, given the infinite number of variables that define reality, ultimately illusory.During the Enlightenment, science and philosophy were considered two sides of the same coin. One was considered meaningless without the other. The word philosophy actually meant all knowledge, including scientific knowledge. That, of course, isn’t the current thinking among scientists. All sense of philosophical context has been lost and, as a result, we are essentially “dumbing down” knowledge in order to make it fit the scientific paradigm of the day. Which is why so much scientific discovery is ultimately proven to be in error, or at least not complete.Technology, it seems, is suffering a similar fate. Does AI take us to a new world beyond human intelligence or does it dumb down what it means to be human to fit the technological paradigm? Yes, autonomous driving cars will reduce the number of mistakes that human drivers typically make. But that’s within the context of human driving and that context will change. Will there be a whole new range of accidents that are enabled by the context of AI driving that don’t exist today? At the end of the book Fisher asks the geniuses (not used pejoratively at all) of the Valley what the future holds. And to a person there are two themes: 1. We are the masters of technology because we have a culture of disruption and innovation. 2. Technology will change the world.Fair enough. But what about context? A quick browse of any newsfeed suggests the world is imploding. And technology is certainly playing a role in that. Who is asking the larger contextual question about what that role is and how technology can become more than weaponized disruption in search of the next billion dollar payday? If the technologists don’t address the larger issues of social context they won’t have the freedom to create the wonderful technologies they envision. Nothing, not even the Valley, exists in isolation. (And, no, I am not a Luddite. I actually went to the CEO of my first corporate employer to convince him to buy me a 128k Mac, at a cost of $4,500, as I recall, over the strongest possible objections of our corporate IT department, just because I could smell change in the air and thought we should at least understand it.)This really is a brilliant book, brilliantly written, that everyone should read. I only hope that the genius outlined here finds context in the larger issues of social responsibility and progress. Technological progress without philosophical context will be hollow, at best, and destructive at worst.

For decades I’ve known some of the Silicon Valley “hackers, founders and freaks” who are the subject of “Valley of Genius”, and I’ve read plenty of stories and books about them. Adam Fisher’s book is the best yet — a thrilling first person account of dozens of stories we thought we knew. (Full disclosure: I was interviewed and have a very small role.)Fisher did about 200 interviews and then disappeared. It turned out he was doing a clever thing: instead of writing articles or a book about the innovators, he lets us tell the story. Flip through the book and you don’t find any of his writing. Instead, he’s edited the interviews so it sounds like we’re all together. Chiming in, finishing each other’s sentences and stories, adding detail, arguing and contradicting each other - describing what we dreamed, did, and saw. Valley of Genius is a perfect example of what makes oral history so compelling. It’s full of details that stories about technology often miss. For instance: our little company VPL had coined the term Virtual Reality and invented much of the technology when it was still way too expensive for any but the largest corporations. A year after the company folded, the Playstation came out with 3D graphics hardware that could replace $50,000 graphics computers for $300 — a factor of more than 100 — making vast new markets possible. But since that visionary team no longer existed, and its dreadlocked founder had moved on, the hype cycle was in remission and nobody seemed to notice. That scrappy team would have cannibalized two Playstations and had the first affordable VR system the week they came out. Instead the industry waited another 20 years. No previous VR story or book has come close to capturing that. That spirit is all through the book — people taking apart TVs and hunting down a video signal to make the first affordable electronic game or computer, or staying up all night or all week creating software — to do something that had never been done before. Sure, understanding Moore’s Law (of exponentially faster cheaper hardware), and recognizing when this creates opportunities, is one of the keys to success. But “inevitable” innovation when technology advances — that’s a myth. Valley of Genius shows it’s really about tenacious, passionate individuals who don’t wait for technology to catch up with their ideas, and are ready when it does. It isn’t about technology; it’s about a few hundred people following dreams and changing the world. A brilliantly told, thrilling ride.

I have purchased a number of IR photo books. This book was disappointing. The model is attractive but the number and types of poses are limited. All have a black background, in the studio and all shot through a soft focus filter. I don't regret buying the book but it could be a lot more.

Yup this is my favorite book on Ajax. I love Head First books but this one far exceeded my expectations.Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a Java programmer with little bit of experience in web technologies. Before reading this book I had used JavaScript libraries such as [...] So Ajax was not a totally brand new technology for me.I bought this book because for upcoming project, I wanted a deeper understanding of Ajax. Also sometimes, while using Scriptaculous, debugging was not easy, because I didn't know what was really going on behind the scenes. After reading this book, I have better understanding of Ajax. This doesn't mean I am Ajax expert now and ready to write my own library. I will stick with existing libraries. But I feel this book has given me enough basic concepts of Ajax (and also some general web design concepts) that I can use Ajax libraries without breaking anything unintentionally.I don't think I will read another book on Ajax unless I am doing some custom Ajax coding.

This book is not for the person learning on their own, or not in a class. Yes, I agree, Head First presentation is humorous, easy to read, etc., but there are many errors in syntax and code in this book. One needs to set up a server on their computer to run the code. In chapter 1 it says there is info in the Appendix "i", "the top ten topics we didn't cover", but there are only five, and the missing five are not online. I thought the problems were with the server I set up, but other code ran fine. The problem was the code itself. I could fix the syntax and typo errors, but being the student, I am not able to correct the code. It took me two days to figure out the code was the problem. When I saw there were errors in the second chapter also, I quit, and went looking for a better text. Maybe it was rushed to press, and not type read, but after a year, you'd expect that at least the files one downloads for the lessons would have been corrected. Head First was Head Dropped on this one.

It is very discouraging to have a problem with the first code that doesn't work. In the first Chapter there is no information that you should create "script" folder in the downloaded "HeadFirstAjax_Ch01_Initial" and then place created "thumbnails.js" in it. For the html page to work you have to do this or change the script src to " script src="thumbnails.js".

I got this book to learn a little AJAX; I'm often curiuos how stuff works behind the scenes. I've been a fan of this series for years and loved JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, but I found this really hard to get through. It's sort of like reading the phone book, full of information, but dry as a bone. If you don't have a pretty good knowledge of XML, CSS, and XHTML already you won't learn enough here to help you.Let me be clear, this is not a book that will teach you some AJAX tricks for your website. I find that a better way to learn, by seeing the little bits and then building to bigger and better things. I made it about half way through before I just lost interest and it's been sitting on the table ever since gathering dust ever since. If you're a devloper or really know what you're doing already and want to gain some better knowledge or some new ideas, then this is a good book. If you're just starting out or a casual user then you should definitely start with a different book. For CSS, CSS: The Missing Manual was a well written and easy read. If that series ever does an AJAX book or just for learning the supporting pieces of AJAX bit by bit, you might try those books.

the head first style is great, in that it really takes the time explain the details. it never assumes you know anything, and as a result, you learn a lot. i think they did a really good job of this. with that said, the "head first style" grows old the further you go along in the book with a strong want for real code examples without all the goofy stuff. and with that, it's well documented at this point, the book has code errors.

It's a book

This book is terribly outdated now. The advent of jQuery makes much of the authors code seem overly complex these days. For anyone new to JavaScript based web design, the first few hundred pages are a good introduction to working with ajax, but after that much of the technology outlined in this book can be achieved via much easier methods with the frameworks available today.

While the concept of the book is good and appeals to the nerd/comic book lover in me, it was a bit overly complicated. It seemed like they tried to make everything easy with lots of pix, in point of fact the concepts are STILL very difficult and having the candy coating actually was more confusing to me.Maybe it was just me. But I got a lot more out of other references.

This book is well written and clear with lots of follow along activities. While I'm pretty new to Project, I still found the pace exhaustingly slow. It's a bit hard to skip ahead as you don't really know when the good stuff is going to come in. It's done this way to allow you to work either from start to end, or jump from topic to topic.I can't fault them for this, but as I was trying to learn everything about the program, I found the pace so painfully slow that it was a bit discouraging.I think this book is best for either a person who does not have a lot of computer experience and really wants their hand held at every step, or someone who just needs a reference to look up particular techniques. If you are fairly savvy and are trying to learn quickly, you may find this a bit of a drag.4 Stars because it's good at what it does, but not 5 because for some it'll just be too dull.

I really enjoyed this book (I've read about 80% of it so far). I already knew the basics of Microsoft Project, and was able to skip the first couple chapters of it. But I found that for the topics where I needed a refresher or to learn completely new material, it was perfect for me.I'm not someone who needs to spend an hour to learn a simple task. The Step-By-Step series tell you you're gonna learn, how it applies in a realistic example, and walks you through the steps. They don't beat around the bush and they don't give you too much or too less. The screenshots were helpful as well. But what I liked most about the book -- which was an unexpected bonus -- is the little tidbits of Project Management wisdom thrown in to each chapter plus an entire chapter at the end. I'm not a PMP, but reading these sections was like reading a PMP refresher book.

Among what real managers are likely to face, there cannot be many harder projects to plan and track than the shooting of a film. It's a really good idea that this book uses a short movie's shooting schedule as the model project for all its exercises and illustrations. The text is very repetitive, which is I suppose good because you can jump in at the chapter you need without having to dig back through the early chapters to find all the intermediate steps that get you to what you want to do. The text is very clear, and every example on the CD works as described in the text.Helps me not worry about working in Project.

This book not only teaches you how to use MS Project, but it also explains a lot about Project Management. Anyone learning MS Project should also understand Project Management, just like you should know grammar when you are using MS Word. This book also uses good examples and is very enjoyable to read. In fact, it teaches in such a way that allows me to be able to grasp its definitions! Very helpful!!

Great !

I find this book very easy to read. I am a beginner and the book is very friendly describing the info. Go ahead. You will not regret paying the $$$. The good thing that every keyword in the text is blue-colored. If you read the fist part (5 chapters) you will understand the PM very well (if you are a novice). Good for students and professionals too. The CD attached for practicing is very easy too. I am happy.

This is an obsolete item. I have to review it just to get rid of the Amazon nag on review a purchased item.

Very good
