This book has an approachable and clear writing style. It endeavors to be a comprehensive review of a topic - Technical Editing - that is sort of a niche. It was once a great book, I think. Twenty years ago, I may have given it at least four stars.However, in 2019, this book is sorely out of date. It assumes your primary tool for editing technical documents will be pen and paper. There are references to MS Word, online publishing and email, but they feel perfunctory and tacked on. The meat of the text is about how to handle printed pieces of paper. Tracking changes is really about as modern as it gets. Google Docs and other real time collaboration tools, which are the primary domain of technical communicators in 2019, simply do not exist in this textbook. Adobe products get only the barest of glances.Honestly, I'm angry. I paid over a hundred and twenty five dollars to buy this book new, without any access to online content, because so many other reviewers complained that their rented versions were falling apart. While the book fortunately did arrive in good shape, it is criminal to charge this much for something nearly ten years out of date. (The fifth edition was published in 2011.) But they would not be able to demand this price if instructors did not keep using this book to teach their technical editing courses, so in that regard I can't really blame Amazon or the publisher. Our instructor went so far as to apologize to us for the book's heavy emphasis on paper editing. But however sorry she felt, it didn't stop her from using it as the foundation to our coursework. I suspect there aren't many other book-length treatments of the topic out there, and so for now this text continues to sell to instructors who want an "all in one" solution to their course planning, however outdated it may be.Using it is a disservice to students, though. I might even argue that technical editing isn't really a skill you can read about to any great impact aside from a few sweeping discussions about conventions and the distinctions between writers and editors. Technical editing is something you need to practice to understand. Practicing it mostly via pen and paper will not give you the skills you need to be employable in the field in 2019 and beyond.

This is an excellent textbook and was very helpful during my technical editing class. The chapters contain useful exercises at the end and the authors use real-world examples to explain concepts. Chapter length is also very manageable.However, I STRONGLY recommend against renting it from Amazon. I received a heavily-abused and marked up version of the text (to the point that I could hardly read some of it). When I returned it to Amazon, I was told that the book was damaged and that I would have to pay to replace it. So Amazon will try to use you to replace their worn out textbooks if you choose to rent from them.

I used this book in a recent technical editing course. I initially rented the book through Amazon, but the copy I received was falling apart, and had notes taken in ballpoint throughout; it was totally unusable, so I purchased a new copy, also from Amazon. I'm glad I did, because this is a book that I want to keep. I've worked in public affairs and media for most of the last 25 years. Although I don't work as an editor, I feel it is likely that I'll refer back to this book regularly.

I love this book!!! It's everything real and informative about a career in editing and what to expect in this career field work. The book is expensive and so I'm renting a used copy, but I intend on buying a new soft copy when I can afford it. This is the book that is used in college English class that I'm taking.

The book is smaller than I expected and there is an additonal fee to access the writing lab. Other publishers include a free access code with new textbooks. For such an expensive paperback, Pearson should do the same for this book.

This book is very thorough , and an excellent review of the editing process.

I would like to say my five star review is rooted in my own literary acumen and this particular book's compelling, beautiful, almost lyric prose. And the book is filled with beauty, lyric and profane. But since it was written by my wife, I feel like I have to come clean and say I'd be giving her five stars regardless, because I loved her more than anything. I love my kids a TON. They're amazing little guys, my favorite living people in the whole world, and I'd literally lay down in Boston traffic for them. But I'd swap them every day of the week for Nina. Sorry guys. Twice on Sundays. (Why Boston? Well, it may not be the worst traffic, but I think it's maybe got the drivers with the most mens rea of any city I've ever been to.).Seeing the book come together, getting to witness the transition from idea, to concept, to manuscript, now to nearly final publication, has been a treat not only because of the publication itself, but how much its helped me and my family focus on the important things Nina left us. Her talent, her wit, charm, beauty, and her complete refusal to let terminal disease ruin the few bright days she had left after her cancer ran wild. The Bright Hour will be a tremendous legacy for our two boys as they grow and learn to live with their loss, and anytime they want access to Nina, a huge part of her will be right there on the page. But I also hope as many people as possible will share in that legacy and get to know Nina as well as anyone can now that she's gone. And not just because of the loss at such a young age, but because of the amazing person she was and the tremendous talent she had for sharing her vision for leading a good life, even under the shadow of terminal disease. Trust me: She was the absolute best and it comes through beautifully here in The Bright Hour.

However, reading a stunning book with their insightful, witty, and compassionate views of what it takes to be a friend, a daughter, a mother, a wife, how to keep living even when in great pain, and how to just care, knowing that your days are truly numbered is beyond eye-opening. It is hard to comprehend how Nina Riggs wrote THE BRIGHT HOUR: A MEMOIR OF LIVING AND DYING considering what she faced. When did she do it? Between her mother dying of cancer shortly before she did, taking care of two young children, enduring painful treatment, going on trips with her family? Her stamina is astounding.While her future, or lack of one, is unbearable, and casts a shadow over the book, she embraces life. There is so much to learn about love and about how having a sense of humor can get you through the toughest of times.A descendent of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Riggs, feels her great-great-great grandfather with her as she is writing. She feels him when she takes a walk in the woods. She feels him when she visits her family’s vacation home that her great-grandfather built. His words are shared throughout the book and resonate with the reader like a song playing on a loop in your head.“[Nature] always speaks of Spirit. It suggests the absolute. It is a perpetual effect. It is a great shadow pointing always to the sun behind us…. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.”Funny. Riggs admits to her mother that she is not a nature fan after a week at overnight camp. Her devotion comes by way of reading a good book. Truth be told, she didn’t connect with Emerson either, as a young girl. While a college student, walking in the woods, the bond was made.She rereads Montaigne, who clearly has had a profound impact on her all of her life, sharing this knowledge with her mother and her husband, and imparting his wisdom with her boys. A writer who connects her with Emerson.Memoir writers are a lot like teachers. Riggs guides us through her life, showing us many bumps as well as highlights, no preaching, a textbook not necessary. Nina Riggs' memoir, "The Bright Hour: A Memoir of Living and Dying" can be compared to "When Breath Became Air", by Dr Paul Kalanithi, which was published in 2016. Both were written by late-30's year olds who were facing the end of their lives with quiet fortitude and a sense of spirit. Both realised their coming deaths from cancer was the cruel reality that only few people ever have to face. Riggs and Kalamithi both wrote beautiful books that were "finished" after their deaths by their loving spouses.Nina Riggs was in her mid-thirties when a small lump was found in her breast. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to stop the progress. She was from a family whose "tree" was riddled with cancer; her mother died shortly before she did from multiple-meyloma. Riggs helped nurse her mother but also nursed herself. As the mother of two young sons, Riggs and her husband, John, had the tough case of keeping things together, but also facing the future together.How does one stay calm in the face of the diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer? i had little hope for this as I could not imagine anyone with a pedigree including the Washington Post writing anything objective but Mr. Atkinson did. This is a truly monumental effort. I've read quite a # of WWII books and they all have something to offer, and many are far superior to this as far as their story but to write a massive missive like this, well documented, with one hell of a vocabulary as well (polders?)....well, kudos to Mr. Atkinson and a moment of reverent silence to the millions of military and civilian dead who went into its writing. A few minor quibbles; there's almost nothing in there at all about Norway, nothing about the eastern front, and little about things like the Jedburgh's, but those can be filled in by other books, and for anyone wanting a comprehensive look at the war 50 years later, this is as good as I can imagine. I got a little annoyed with his treatment of patton early on, but the more I read it the more I realize it was probably pretty balanced and Patton was truly a bizarre hero. He tended to buff Mark Clark a bit, who by many other accounts was an absolutely inept soldier, and I truly enjoyed the way he introduced little known other generals - Devers, Buckner, Slim - to the reader. Also, without knowing which side of the coin he was on, he managed to get across that Montgomery was a blithering foppish fool, and that DeGaulle was perhaps the most nauseating leader in the entire morass with his timely return and idiotic and unsubstantiated demands. My own take was that Roosevelt and Eisenhower were not quite the geniuses we've been lead to believe they are, especially with some of the events that occurred in the east toward the end of the war with British and US prisoners being basically sold out to the Russians, but I was also disappointed to realize that my hero Churchill was a great leader, and a great soldier, but a bit more of a military klutz than I'd ever realized - a great leader of his nation but a meddler and perhaps the Dardanelles wasn't entirely a one off mistake on his part; he had great missteps in Italy and Western Europe as well. What came across was the gallantry and the fallibility of all of these men in various ways.But it is all in the books, and they are superbly written, with excellent gripping syntax, just enough varied style to keep you riveted, and a great balance between the battles, the logistics, the great men, and the little people who make up war history. Some of the personal recollections and personal histories were the most moving in the entire series.

In the second installment of Rick Atkinson’s ‘Liberation Trilogy’ the author takes readers on a deep dive into the gritty details of the war in the Mediterranean. Starting with the landings of Sicily in 1943 and ending on the eve of the D-Day invasion of Normandy with the seizure of Rome in June of 1944 we experience the long slog of the allied forces through Italy. Atkinson’s in depth research is deftly woven into an intriguing narrative that paints a grim picture of the campaign to exploit the Axis’ ‘soft underbelly’ as Churchill phrased it. I’m a WWII history buff but found I didn’t know as much about this fight as I thought I did until I read “The Day of Battle”. Atkinson takes you into the minds of generals and grunts alike bringing the story alive following in the footsteps of Cornelius Ryan, Stephen Ambrose, Max Hastings, and Antony Beevor. The war in Italy remains controversial and questions of its strategic value remain to this day. Certainly the allies managed to tie up large numbers of Nazi resources in a long war of attrition that might otherwise have been employed on the Eastern Front and helped to pacify Stalin until D-Day. One GI after entering Rome and experiencing the exuberant welcome from the city populace wrote: “I felt wonderfully good, generous, and important. I was a representative of strength, decency, and success.” If you want to expand your understanding about this often overlooked theater of WWII then “The Day of Battle” is an excellent book and is highly recommended.

This is the second volume in historian and journalist Rick Atkinson's "Liberation Trilogy," and it is magnificent. Rick Atkinson writes in clear, concise, and lively prose to tell the story of the United States Army's war against Nazi Germany in Sicily and Italy. That fight began in July 1943, as Allied forces followed up their victory over Germany in North Africa by invading Sicily.The battle for Sicily was relatively short and not as difficult as the later battle for Italy. Rick Atkinson does a masterful job of telling the story of the political differences between the American and British at all levels, from high government officials, to the commanding generals, to the soldiers in the field. He recounts the story of General George Patton's slapping of two soldiers, as well as the ongoing feud between Patton and British Field Marshal Montgomery.Compared to the battle for Italy, Sicily was a relatively straightforward affair. Once the Allies invaded Italy, however, German resistance stiffened to the point where the issue was very much in doubt. Some of the most memorable of Atkinson's passages in "The Day of Battle" recount the full horror of battles fought by individual soldiers. These passages are full of blood, bone, gore, mud, rain, cold, smoke and noise. They are some of the most realistic and descriptive words about war that I have ever read."The Day of Battle" is a wonderful work of history and a fascinating read. Highly recommended.

This book helped me get through labour and reaffirmed my parenting decisions.The first section Gentle Birth gave a whole lot of information about the negatives of interventions that I'd thought were pretty much harmless and I was glad to be more informed. These include: ultrasound (!), IV analgesia, epidurals, IV antibiotics, caesareans. My favourite part of the book was the natural hormonal physiology of childbirth - a perfect orchestration for a safe, healthy and satisfying experience. The most useful piece of information for me was the idea that the same energy that got the baby in there can help get it out and recommending sexual expression during labour. I found that making sexual noises helped me get through the peaks of contractions - I recommend any labouring woman try it! The author also shares her own 4 birth stories.Section two, Gentle Mothering, highlights the benefits of skin-to-skin, co-sleeping, and breast feeding, and presents what research has been done around these topics. Following her recommendations has helped to make the early weeks with my second baby very manageable.

This book should be in the hands of every expectant mother. The information it contains on natural childbirth, or "undisturbed birth" is eye-opening. The author has researched the subject meticulously, and includes more scientific data, backed up by referenced studies, than I have seen in any other birth/ maternity book. Alone, the section on the intricate, finely orchestrated hormones at work in the labor process is enough to dissuade me from being induced or having pain medication except in extreme circumstances. This book empowers the expectant mother with confidence in the fact that her body is capable of birthing a child without intervention. The viewpoint that birth is a medical event, or should be an expected medical emergency, could not be more wrong.

I wish that all women could read this book. Sarah Buckley lays out all the possible interventions during pregnancy and labor in an easy to understand way looking at the Benefits, Risks, Alternatives and what would happen if you did nothing for the common interventions. This book was an inspiration during my pregnancy and I feel that understanding the hormones involved during labor helped me have a beautiful birth in a birth center with my midwife.

I felt really positive about going into labour after reading this book, and like that she has done some scientific research into her reasons for natural birth. A few slightly alternative pieces of advice that I found a bit odd, and I was definitely naive about how hard labour was going to be, but an enjoyable book that was fun to read in the late stages of my pregnancy.

Love this book. One of the best on this topic, and not information you're going to find in a lot of other baby books. Sarah Buckley has a voice and experience that makes me trust her and I appreciate her advice.

This book hits the left brain with the stats and the studies and the facts. And it hits the right brain with the heart and soul of birth. It's an amazing reference for any expectant family.

The only thing I am concerned about with this book (and let me be clear, I am ideologically aligned with the author), is the unequal information Ms. Buckley gives about breach birth. She describes her own unassisted footling breach homebirth, and her "just knowing" that the baby would be okay, and it was. I am a midwife-in-training and a mom to 2 midwife-assisted daughters. The science about birth (and breach birth in particular) says that nearly always, birth will turn out fine with little or no assistance. But there are those cases (like shoulder dystocia, or certain complications of breach) where a competent midwife is needed to either stabilize an emergency for transport, or resolve an emergency. Parents need to know that, while unassisted homebirth is usually safe (and is something I support), they are taking a risk that an emergency might arise that results in the death of a baby that otherwise would have been preventable if a midwife were on the scene. For some people, that risk is acceptable, and even preferable to the near-certainty of over-use of interventions in a hospital birth. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to safe homebirth midwifery care because of the laws in the US (and in Australia).

This book has updated viewpoints with references. A good book to read if you want to be educated about birth. Use it to make your birthplan, and use it to help you know how you may deviate from your birthplan due to differing circumstances. My birth plan went out the window with a 42 hr labor, but I am content with the decisions made to deviate from it because I knew ahead of time what my choices might be and why. I was informed as to complications that might occur as a result of reading this book and others.

This book is a good wake-up call to the dangers pilots put there passengers, and those on the ground, in by thinking they can do it all by themselves. It has the usual war stories of "There is was upside down at 20,000 feet..." but integrates a good overview of CRM into the discission and lets you see for yourself how effective CRM could have prevented all the accidents, incidents, and felony stupids sighted.A quick read about three hours and has a good index (what can I say, a text book without a good index is worthless). I gave the book four stars because some of the chapters are written by guest authors resulting in some lack of consistency. Also a bibliography would have been nice.I have also thumbed through some of the other books in this series. The series appears to be a must read for any one in the aviation community who is serious about flight safety.

Abstract: The comic adaption has much of what made me love the animated version. Original story with themes and characters from the show. I'm an adult without kids, but I have loved animation since my own childhood. Adventure Time is one of my favorite series, despite usually preferring anime, or western animation for older viewers like King of the Hill or Archer.=====This is the first "universe" I've gotten into enough to actively seek out additional media. This is also my first purchase (I also got Vol. 2 before writing this.)Please forgive me if I use incorrect terms. I am not particularly familiar with the industry or fan-terms for comics or manga.1. Excellent artwork, and in a color palette consistent across media. I like the color in general, it is very accessible and appropriate for the subject matter. I like noir and/or avant-garde art too, but I think the choices for the series as a whole contribute to its charm and ease of review.2. Story: the book is an original story in the Adventure Time universe. It is not a direct novelization (comicification?) of the animated show. That would be fun too, but I sought it out wanting more AT (new to me) content.The story is good. Lumped in with the animations I'd rate an episode with this story as 3.5-4★ of 5. I'll surely read this book again too.3. Extras: it comes with an extra 20-30 pages of cover art for various special runs, and a bit of author commentary. I got the kindle version, but I could see these and the show title cards as an amazing coffee table book.4. It's Adventure Time.I really enjoy the series. I'm usually into stuff like anime (most genres), adult swim, @midnight, stand-up, etc. or reading. I like AT because it is fun. It is a post-apocalyptic candy land. It is relevant and timeless. It doesn't pander. It has a broad vocabulary. It touches some heady philosophy/physics. Then just as quickly plays with them "bring chips and bevs!" At times it is real, and other times it says what needs to be said in a way that is empowering (Re: Neddy) - I'd almost dare to say it shares that with Calvin and Hobbes, but usually in a less self aware way, and sometimes just by being culturally aware. Even then, the characters are flawed, but not irredeemably so.It is a great place to sit, watch, and just run with it.

I was surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. The show's sense of humor is well represented, the artwork resembled the show enough while having it's own style, and the colors really popped. The variant covers in the back were beautiful. This contains a single story arc that takes place over four issues, and has a legitimate ending. So while im left wanting more, it doesn't come with that awful lack of closure most comics rely on to get you to buy more.I don't buy single floppy comics, so I was unaware that the indie comic artist short are not collected here, that's why I'm not giving it four stars. I do intend to get the collected shorts, but I would have preferred they all be printed in this trade instead.

When I first heard there were comics of the show, I wasn't initially sold on the idea, and got a 'cheap, shoddy cash tie in' vibe. ...But the recommendations were all so good I overcame my wariness and bought the first collected volume.I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. The comic conveys the same wit and humor as the show, and being in-canon, within the same continuity as the cartoon, makes it feel all the better, like it's not just some cheap side-project.The "Adventure Time TP Vol 01" collects the primary story from the first four issues, forming what feels like a complete episode in this book. As my understanding of it goes, the issues have a 'primary' story that runs alongside 'secondary' stories illustrated by independent artists. The Trade Paperbacks collect only the primary story, but if you're like me and tend to wait for collected volumes like this, instead of purchasing individual issues as they come out, this is still well worth the price.I heartily recommend this to anyone who's a fan of the show!

Hilarious and well drawn. The dialogue is priceless and the transition from the screen to the page is seamless. Fun and appropriate for all ages, but some of the jokes and underlying tones may go over the heads of some younger readers.

Fans of the show will love this. Funny and full of action! Don't miss the quips and mini comics at the bottom of the page; sometimes hard to read, but worth it. Bonus cover gallery at the end, plus "From Script to Page."

I recieved this book for free as a promotion. This book does go over medical terms but it does not break down all of the terms. It's a good book if you just need an overview of some medical terms.

Doesn’t have enough of information and it’s really small.

I got this book to help my daughter in nursing school. It is easy to use nd great for beginners. I am so glad I got it for her.

Simple to read. The Author isn't getting too deep in anything. Very general kind of guide. Useful for general knowledge and maybe beginner medics.
