This story picks up just as Clint and Susan Wolf return from their honeymoon. Unfortunately, the couple has no time to catch up on their rest. They are catapulted into a murder scene that is as confusing as it is horrifying. Well defined characters and easily followed plot line.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all the other Clint Wolf books. The ends are a'm ways very unpredictable. I am very much looking forward to the next one.

Wonderfully written! BJ Bourg' s books are totally fascinating and you very rarely come close to figuring out who did it! I highly recommend all of his books!

A continuation of the great writing by BJ Bourg. Suspenseful from the first page until the last page. Great characters and story development.

As with the first six this was a really great book. It did make me cry. I will start the waiting process for book 8!!!!!!!

Mr. Bourg has done it yet again. Fast moving, twists and turns, spell binding until the end. And then I want more.

About the Author

James Sturm is a cartoonist and the cofounder of The Center for Cartoon Studies. His graphic novels include The Golem's Mighty Swing, Market Day, and Off Season. His picture books for children include Ape and Armadillo Take Over The World, Birdsong, and the Adventures in Cartooning series (with Andrew Arnold and Alexis Frederick-Frost). Rich Tommaso started writing and drawing original comics and graphic novels in 1993. He is mostly known for his series of crime novels, the first of which was Clover Honey. Since then, he has penned a few more crime books, including Sam Hill: The Cavalier Mr. Thompson, Dark Corridor and Dry County. At the moment he is drawing a new, but classically-styled, Dick Tracy comic series with Mike, Lee, and Laura Allred. Aside from his crime work he's made a dozen other comics and graphic novels in various genres, including Spy Seal, She Wolf, Vikings' End, Don't Look Back, 8 1/2 Ghosts, Perverso!, The Horror of Collier County, and a humorous travel book called Let's Hit the Road. He lives in Atlanta, GA with his girlfriend, Amy, and their two cats.

Although it is in black and white, this graphic novel is exellent autobiographical and biographical story combined. As Emmet Sr. tells his story, he links Satchel Paige's career with his own life. I found this combination of autobiography and biography quite interesting. Through Emmet's eyes, the reader can experience how Satchel was able to override the Jim Crow system through baseball, and one suspects that Emmet vicariously savors Satchel's boldness and sassiness before white people when he was in the ballpark. Just for a few moments I thought that the story of Emmett Till was a part of this graphic novel when the father narrates the story of his son's "mysterious" dissappearance. Fortunately, the narrator finds his son alive. However, the story is there to show the extent to which white people subdued blacks into social inferiority. The whole purpose of scaring Emmet by hurting his son was to warn him against educating his son. Later on, Satchel's victory over the white team becomes a great victory for himself.Because of its length, however, I'm not sure how I could use it in the classroom. But, I'll keep thinking about it.

Graphic novel biographies are touch-and-go affairs. For example, Houdini: The Handcuff King by Jason Lutes and Nick Bertozzi did little for me. I could see what the creators were trying to do, but taking a single selection out of Houdini's life and then making it directly into a comic book without any flashbacks, cuts, or original takes on his life... well, what's the point really? If you can't get creative with your subject when you're making a graphic novel out of their life then you may as well just create a plain old piece of non-fiction and be done with it. You need to do something to deserve your graphic format. In this way, Lutes and Bertozzi could take a page out of the book of James Sturm and Rich Tommaso, then. "Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow" can't be called anything but entirely thrilling. By telling Paige's stories through another man's eyes, the reader is given a fuller understanding of the times in which blacks lived during the height of Jim Crow. A graphic novel bio done right.Our unnamed hero decides in 1929 to support his family by becoming a professional baseball player. It might have worked out too had he not played early on against the great Satchel Paige and busted his knee. Now he works as a sharecropper in the deep South and times are hard. His son is beaten by the white landowners for going to school rather than working their fields and there's little to be done about it. Then, one day, Satchel Paige is advertised as coming to play the local white baseball team and everyone turns out. At first Paige doesn't show and the game grows tense. Yet by the end of the day Paige's eventual presence causes an outpouring of support from all sides and colors. In the midst of all this, the narrator decides to finally tell his son about his baseball days and remind his child that he still has options.The idea of placing Paige within the context of his times by narrating through someone else is inspired and probably why the book works as well as it does. The fictional sharecropper who tells his own story first and how Paige intersected with it second, is a great character because you can feel the reality of his situation. The danger of writing any book for children that discusses Jim Crow is that your author is going to dumb down the material. Make light of the horror of the time, even. Sturm is very clever in this respect. He drills home both the constant threat of violence present at the time alongside the beating down of the spirit. When the sharecropper's son goes to school instead of helping in the fields a horrific segment brings these horrors together. As for illustrator Rich Tommaso, he doesn't have to show any more that the simplest of images to complement these moments. You might hear about a "cotton sack tied around his head. Blood leakin' through the sack," but the next panels are just of the boy's mother boiling water quietly and carefully. Against this backdrop, Paige's appearance is as welcome to the characters as it is the readers. And a book that can elicit a direct connection between character and reader has done its job and done it well.Baseball, it seems, is the sport with the best narrative potential. Now I don't mean to belittle football, basketball, or any of those other nice games, but in baseball you've a constant heightening of narrative tension. That's why stories about baseball players work so well. When you see those nasty Jennings brothers out there facing Satchel Paige, you want nothing short of blood. In lieu of blood, strikeouts will have to do, and boy do they ever! Even kids unfamiliar or uninterested in the game itself will be drawn deeply into Sturm and Tommaso's recaps. I suppose that for a kid reading this book there might be some mild confusion over whether or not we're supposed to root for Paige initially. After all, our narrator does bust his knee in the process of playing against Paige. Still, the spirit of competition should never be confused with good vs. evil. The book makes that much apparent.It's clear that ample research was done on this book, particularly when you consider the authenticity of the narrator's life. The back of the book is filled too with "Panel Discussions" which lift select images from the book's panels and give a little historical background to things like the African American press, barnstorming, and lynching, to name but a few. The rest of the book just feels right. Not like a current author trying to shoehorn himself into a historical record, but like the words were tripping out of the narrator's mouth directly into your ear. With its misleadingly simple images and deep vein of authenticity, "Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow" comes across as a biography of necessity. It's not a replacement for those other bios with their focus centered squarely on the hero in question, but rather as a perfect complement. Anyone can learn a fact or two about Satchel Paige. How much rarer it is to feel firsthand why it is that people considered his existence extraordinary. Beautiful, harsh, and real.

This is a wonderful book, with historical depth, humor, suspense, tragedy, and sensitivity. The author and illustrator really provide insight into the psychology of segregation. My son and I both enjoyed it, and the mentions of many sad truths about the Jim Crow years in context (detailed in the fantastic endnotes) provide a jumping off point for serious discussion. Due to the violence portrayed, I'd recommend this book for ages 9 and up.

If you're looking for a Satchel Paige biography, this book might not be for you. If you want to read a story which paints a poignant picture of the times in which he lived, and what he meant to the people of his generation, by all means treat yourself this extremely well-written graphic novel.

All the press and blurbs I had read regarding this graphic novel led me to believe it was a biography of the great negro-league and major-league pitcher Satchel Paige. Even the back cover implies this. Instead, it's a story of how Satchel's performance at a 1944 "white vs. black" exhibition game gives inspiration to a former negro-league player and his son who live in the Jim Crow-era south. Unfortunately, this particular part of the story only makes up the last half of the book, and it would have been even less if the pages were not filled with depictions of every agonizing ritual, rhythm, pitch, and swing of a baseball game.The introduction is the only part of this book that tells you anything about Satchel Paige's life, and while he does figure into the main character's fate and the conclusion of the story, his actual involvement throughout is minor. I'm not saying that this book is horrible - the short chapters, in and of themselves, are interesting, and there is an overall message here, but the point could have been made using fewer pages and without the blaring emphasis on Paige. I would appreciate it if the publishers would be more forthcoming with the focus of their books in the future.

I am so happy I found this book before my trip to Buenos Aires. It is full of enormously helpful advice that no tango traveler should be without, but only an insider would know.Sally Blake made a trip to Bs. As. after only having danced for 5 months in her native England and ended up staying to learn and dance tango in the city of it's birth. She has navigated it's many milongas and made all the mistakes for you. Her advice and rules are designed to maximize your chances of getting dances and finding tango bliss (hence the name Happy Tango).In the first section she gives you 11 rules to follow, ones that she has followed (and broken) with quick explanations of why you should follow them. The 2nd section is an A to Z of dancing tango in Bs. As., all things tango you might encounter or need to know, with very helpful definitions and advice. In this section under the definition of "codigos" she outlines the code of conduct you should follow at the milongas to avoid looking like a newcomer or committing an embarrassing gaffe. In the 3rd Section she gives you advice on where you might be happiest dancing and descriptions of 20 milongas to try neatly sorted into three categories (tourist circuit, traditional and informal) with notes on how to get there and what you NEED TO KNOW to enjoy yourself at each milonga or practica.There's even a final section with practical advice on where to stay, what to eat, money matters, learning Castellano (Argentine Spanish), getting around, safety, staying connected and even what to see on your time off from tango (if you take any). There are also a few appendices which include tango schools, shoe stores and people she has met in her time there who might be helpful to know about.I feel like I now have a much more realistic set of expectations and am armed with great advice. I also feel like I'm traveling with a friend who can help me avoid some pitfalls. This is a book that will go in my carry-on and be re-read on the plane ride.--------Having now been in Bs As for two weeks I want to also add that not a day has gone by where I have not consulted this book for advice. BUY THIS BOOK!The one caveat: as do all things hip and cultural there are some changes in milonga location from year to year, so if you buy this edition make sure you check websites (they are helpfully provided) for locations and hours so you don't dress for an informal practica and end up crashing a very traditional milonga. Yes, I did that. :)

A friend of mine once said, "When I read news stories about things I know about, I'm often astonished about how wrong the journalist is about even the most fundamental concepts - which makes me wonder why I should believe anything I read from that publication about things I *don't* know about".On the other hand, we have Sally Blake's wonderful little book. In a relaxed, witty and non-judgmental style, she shares her hard-won lessons about her quest to find her own brand of tango happiness in the the intense Buenos Aires tango social scene. She pragmatically separates the available social tango opportunities into three broad (and somewhat overlapping) categories: "tourist-circuit", "traditional", and "informal", with seven recommended "try-here-first" venues in each category, and thorough information about each recommended venue. For a "tango immigrant" Britisher, her descriptions are refreshingly lacking in tango-fundamentalist dogma, and are nuanced enough to allow you to gauge your best bet for the evening along the lines of the practical, important distinctions: age of attendees, prevalent style of dancing, pace of crowding through the evening, etc.Advice on the logistics of visiting Buenos Aires, the behavior codes in the milongas, any many other aspects of city life critically important to the tango visitor, appears very up-to-date. I know some of the vendors she recommends personally, and can vouch for many of her value judgments. Sally and I would probably see each other sometimes, and not every night, because our tastes and social circles are not exactly a perfect overlap - but her attitudes about aspects of the scene that are not always her preference are well-written and useful.After just returning from my eighteenth trip to Buenos Aires, I can say that Sally's book passes the above "credibility test" with flying colors - her accuracy in describing parts of the scene I know about gives me great confidence in relying on her information about parts that are unfamiliar to me.

I purchased several Travel Guides so that I could become familiar with the territory and hit the ground running, as I will only be there for a week (attending a very intense Argentine Tango Seminar) and I figured the more I know before I get there, the better!Sally has written an extremely comprehensive (yet personable) Guidebook to dancing Argentine Tango in BA, covering everything from: Accommodations, Travel, Food, Sightseeing and Safety (among others) ... and when it comes to the Argentine Tango material, it is a GOLDMINE, with detailed information on: the numerous Milongas and Practicas taking place everyday (and night) of the week, Tango Etiquette (very important to Argentineans), Tango Schools, Tango Psychology, Tango Shoe Stores (yah! ... it's not easy finding great shoes at a great price, for men in my size), the list just goes on and on.The level of specificity and detail in the book cannot be stated enough, I feel like I have been given a complete dossier on Buenos Aires and the Argentine Tango scene there (with everything neatly categorized and easy to find).I feel very well "prepped" for my trip ... because I know that through her book, Sally will be "with me" every step of the way. I am looking forward to writing the second part of my review after I get back.Best Wishes

It has done something that almost no other book I've found has done: it has made the teachings of the faith accessible to people who have a marginal interest and a low reading level.Mind you, the big green Catechism is great. (I still haven't made my way completely through it, but I've read most of it at one time or another.) However, it's scary-looking and huge and intimidating.The Youcat, though, with its yellow cover and Q&A format, is pretty low-key. It transmits important information easily, painlessly.I've been using it during our parish's Confirmation Boot Camp and in any class I teach since it's been released. You might say I'm a shameless fangirl. You'd be correct.It's as important (and as easy) for parents to read as it is for the youth for whom it's written. Over the years, I've noticed a mantra that seems to come around and around and around, coupled with the "you're a convert so of COURSE you're a better Catholic" myth that seems so prevalent. It's the "I can't POSSIBLY teach my child! I don't KNOW enough."I'm a catechist. I want to help. But what I do isn't primary catechesis (except with my own kids). What I do is similar to what all the farmers around me do: I plant. I might even cultivate. The growing, though, is the work of the Holy Spirit.Much of my job as a catechist (and as a writer of things catechetical in places like this) is to encourage and equip parents. YOU CAN DO IT. And here's a tool that will help.As I told my Confirmation students this week: it's okay to ask questions. It's okay to doubt. It's okay to stomp and scream and shake your fist (unless you're my two-year-old, and then we have a different set of standards). God can take it. It's NOT okay to walk away, to give up, to toss in your hat and chalk it up to "the Church needs to get with the times."Obedience, the bad word of our times. It's also something we don't appreciate enough. I can ask and ask and ask (and I do, just ask my priest). Seeking knowledge isn't bad. And here's part of the arsenal you need to be ready for that part of the job.

YouCat is a great catechetical tool; no doubt about it, and I'm excited to be using it for my Confirmation Students this year. As I read through the text, especially the commentary,I do notice some "weakness" of expression. For example, when refering to the possibility of salvation for those who, through no fault of their own, have never heard the Truth of the Gospel, yet live a good life sincerely seeking God according to their understanding, the YouCat says that these "also find salvation," as though it is certain. Yet, the cross references in the CCC (and to/from there in the Compendium, and in the U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults) ALL say "these also 'may' find salvation." There are other such "gloss overs" which 'could' present a deficient understanding if the cross references in the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) are not employed WITH the YouCat.Other than this one flaw, I do recommend YouCat as a great tool for Youth in learning more about the Catholic Faith.

Every Catholic of every age should have a copy of this book. If you want to know what the Church believes, why, and how you can explain it to others, then this book is perfect for you. It is not "simplistic", but it is easy reading. Unlike the full Catechism, it does not follow the strict Article/Paragraph annotation, but instead is more topical. I have found this book invaluable!

YOUCAT met my expectations and was an excellent religious publication for teenagers. It is a wonderful youth Catholic Catechism. It is meant for teenagers in high school who have had a modicum of Catholic Religious Education. It is not designed to be read as a normal book but used as you would read the bible. Pick a topic and read and discuss.

Bibles are sometimes hard to understand even for adults. I bought this book for me since I am teaching CCD and I LOVE IT. I can go straight to the question I have and it gives me detail of the answer our need.

I bought this book for my 15 year old daughter so she could learn something about the Catholic church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a MUST READ for adults who want to know what the Catholic church really teaches and believes, but it is a bit much for teenagers and young adults to grasp. The Youcat is an outstanding alternative to the CCC in that it is written specifically to appeal to that very group of young people. Arranged in a question and answer format it answers the same questions as the CCC but does it in a way that is easier to understand and grasp for young people. It includes quotes from saints, fathers of the church and other experts, definitions of words and terms and cross references among other things. If you are catholic or want to know more about the church in a easy to read and understand format and you are a teenager or young adult then this book is for you.

This Catechism is incredible. It is written in clear, concise language that is easy to understand. I love the quotes from Scripture, popes, saints, and philosophers in the margins. This Catechism has cleared things up about the Catholic faith for me.I think every Catholic teen should have one of these. Of all the apologetics books out there, this is the first one you should buy. I tried to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church once and couldn't because of the heady wording. This makes the Catholic faith easy to comprehend and teach to others.

This is an unbelievable gift for those yearning to know more about their Catholic faith. The book is structured like the Catechism of the Catholic Church and delivers the message clearly with pictures, examples, scripture and saintly discourse. The YouCat is a Catechism designed for the youth but appeals to everyone. I'm using it for a dad's ministry to touch the heart of the father so he can share these important precepts with his family. Most importantly, arming children with the truth before they face the spiritual desert of college life. Test drive one you will be amazed.
