If you want to embrace the ancient maxim, “Nothing human is foreign to me†then reading Lucretius at least once in your life is a must. He personifies one of the fundamental human stances towards the world—that of reasonable, empirical agnosticism. Distrusting all tenets but what reason can reach from the senses, Lucretius tries to teach his ancient addressee, and the rest of us, how to live a life of pleasure and tranquility without fear of damnation. By no means a hedonist, Lucretius both promises to show why many human beings are unhappy and what is the road to happiness. Whether he succeeds is up to the reader’s judgement, but he certainly crafts one of the great philosophical works of antiquity. This description of On the Nature of the Universe may be somewhat surprising as Lucretius is often cited for his atomic theory of nature. While Lucretius’ atomism is certainly prescient he often applies it inappropriately and his absolute dichotomy between atoms and the void has been rejected by physicists since the time of Einstein. So while Lucretius’ atomic theory is of interest in the history of ideas, you are not going to learn about the nature of the physical universe by reading this book. But you may have your anxieties quelled of being hurled to the netherworld because of the pursuit of the good life. And that is, essentially, what Lucretius is about. He is trying to describe to his readers how to love life and face death with honor, serenity and joy. Even those who believe in an Omniscient Judge will find that Lucretius’ criticisms are trenchant and his view of life attractive. Modern writers would do well to chart a path of life as appealing as that of Lucretius.
I enjoy reading physics books for the amateur so I bought this as a way to read what the ancients thought about physics. It was surprisingly beautiful and easy to read. It made me thing that we should bring back a bit of the poetry and beauty to how we think of the world. I really enjoyed this read and I think it has something to offer to the modern reader.
That Lucretius had these ideas in 600 BC is mind blowing!
Keep up good work... :-)
I am still reading this tome of Philosophy and early science. It is a lot to digest as a fast read - I have chosen to read it slowly and cogitate on the content.
I still do not buy into Epicurean ethics wholeheartedly. But the Epicurean physics as applied to daily living based on Atomism is FANTASTICALLY applicable. I still think Stoicism is better for me as a daily living guide. But Stoic physics is essentially useless for an Agnostic like me.Lucretius still has the most cogent exposition of Epicurean physics. And to think that this is a prose translation of a POEM! To be that good in both philosophical exposition AND poetry? Man oh Man.
I bought 3 copies by 3 different translators of "The Nature of Things" by Lucretius Carus, a Roman scholar during the first century BC. The comparison has been fun but Ron Melville won out as the clearest and most engaging writer in bringing this ancient manuscript (poem)to the understanding of a 21st century audience. One has to have the curiosity and love of history to want to read it in the first place. There is nothing in our world that has not its origin in the past. But learning in the news of today the discovery of Higgs boson, the "god particle", during my reading of "The Nature of All Things" superseded all links from past to present. Since Lucretius' writing is based on the theories of the Greek philosopher Epicurus (4th century BC)the thought of particles as essential building blocs in our Universe and life itself has been present in human thought over 2600 years! No matter how far nuclear physics has come today - the germ of this research can be traced to the 4th century BC. I find this awe-inspiring and a great help to revise my concept of life and death, our planet as part of large universe and recorded history by men limited by world views that can be questioned today. How much more potential do we humans have in perceiving, thinking and understanding than our prescribed curricula over the last 600 years has us allowed to realize?Erika Feulner
Do not buy this book. I did, and I can't read this tedious translation of a great writer without falling asleep. Buy, instead, the version titled The Way things Are, a brilliant translation. I wish I had known about it before I bought this one.
