I like these guidebooks. I borrowed the Kauai one from my brother when I went there, then bought this one the first time I visited the Big Island. I loaned the Big Island book out and it was never returned, so I bought it again for my next trip. I even bought the Maui one even though I've been there several times.I think the best parts of these books are the detailed instructions on how to get to some less-traveled areas. You have a chance to see some of the things you might not find in other guidebooks. The author is a resident and tells it more from a local's perspective as opposed to a tourist. If beach time is your thing, most beaches have detailed descriptions of location, facilities, (seasonal) surf conditions, crowds, etc. It even gives instruction on how to get to some of the hard to reach beaches that some resorts or landowners don't want you to access (remember, there are no "private" beaches). You might piss off some people, but even as a tourist you have the right to access the beach.The restaurant section is also pretty good. The author gives the "ono" (tasty) mark if they find the food to be really good or a really good deal, but that's all a matter of opinion. It would be impossible to cover every single restaurant on each island, but it does a surprisingly thorough job. Even giving reviews to hard to find food stands (the Makena Grill on Maui comes to mind; never would have found that on my own). Restaurant locations are divided up by region and it's a lot quicker than Yelping everything.Overall, I think these are the best guidebooks that I've ever used going anywhere, hence the five stars. The language can be a little informal and some attempts at humor come off as a bit cheesy, but very helpful nonetheless. A great reference guide. Bring it on your travels around the island. Unless you're staying for months, pick and choose the things you want to do most as opposed to rushing to get in as much stuff as you can. Have a relaxing trip and come back later if there's still stuff you wanted to do.
This book was difficult to use while in Hawaii as it was laid out for reading but not for using. The only reason I gave it two stars was because it was better than having nothing before our trip and because we found a Black Sand beach that not even the locals believe exists (nobody was there but us).The BAD:What we found when we arrived was that most of the locations mentioned in the book did not have addresses (it did not occur to us until we actually tried to find them) and we had to look them up in Google anyway. Once in Google we actually found more information, comparisons, pictures and contact information. We also realized we could have used Google Maps and the POI capability to set up our trip's daily events.The GOOD:There was one item we found very interesting in this book that we visited and we were very skeptical that it really existed. After a full week of "fumbling around" with this book we decided to visit the "Black Sand" Beach on the West side of the island just north of Kona. There were 2 reasons we were skeptical:1) this book led us astray several times looking for something that was badly marked, not well defined and with no address2) the locals all told us that no such beach existed.So, we followed the directions to a national park with a road that really does need a 4-wheel drive vehicle (we had a 2-wheel drive rental but took it very slow) and aver driving 1.4 miles on this very bad road we came upon a nice regular beach. We were told that to the north (left) was a White sand beach but there is NO Black Sand beach on this side of the island. Again, taking a chance, we walked 40 minutes south where nobody, and I mean nobody, else was within eye sight or ear shot and we came across a small Black Sand beach (calling it a beach is a stretch) but we have pictures of our feet in the sand and it was actually there. After 5 minutes we walked 40 minutes back to the car proud that we found a beach not even the locals know about.
It would be foolish to make a trip to Hawaii without consulting this guide first. You couldn't possibly know the nuances in the climate changes from place to place and time to time, along with other seriously important details without this guide. For instance, I would never think to ask details about the type of helicopter I would be flying in if I were considering a helicopter tour. Can you talk to the pilot during the tour? Will the glare on the glass prevent you from getting great pictures during the flight? Which helicopter company has the best equipment? Before looking through this book, I think I would have let the price be my guide. Not wise! This is better, and I don't think there's another guide like this either. I shopped it. This guide tells you about the best ways to get around and stay comfortably on your budget, where to see beaches in privacy, and how to avoid the typical tourist traps. The book is well designed, separating East, West, North & South so that you can distinguish the Hawaiian places from one another and have a pretty good idea of where you are when a name comes up. If you read the whole thing, you'll think you're fluent in Hawaiian. In addition, it's great fun to read while you dream about your bucket list vacation. Great pictures too!
We have used the 7th edition for two trips to the Big Island and will use the 8th for our next coming up. I have the 7th on my phone and will cross reference between the two for day trips where I can only use the phone. The series is a one of a kind travel guide and sets the bar for all others to achieve. Doughty and his crew have really done their homework and the guides are written in a fresh, non boring, conversational style, inserting his sense of humor and personal Aloha for the islands throughout. In my opinion, this is the best guide for the Big Island, bar none. All the others I have purchased stay home when we go. Every aspect of your trip is covered whether you be a blatant pay for all tourist, a do it yourself adventurist, or one caught somewhere in between.
