What an incredible story! This book is definitely a page turner. The story is fascinating and the content in the second half is very intriguing and informative. The world needs to read When Love Meets Dementia!
This is an important, much needed book. It is both a personal story and a great resource about FTD.
When Love Meets Dementia by Dr. Ada Anbar is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature about caregiving for people with dementia and its many variations. As another reviewer has noted, it is really “two books for the price of one.†The first, is a personal and very dramatic account of her experience with her husband’s FTD. Her story alone would make this book worth reading. Presented in the first third of the book, it vividly captures the symptoms exhibited by her husband and the consequences for her as his caregiver. Her story of being thrown out of the house after 60 years of marriage is both gripping and educational for those who are not well-acquainted with this type of dementia. That’s most of us.The second “book-within-a-book†is dedicated to a thorough discussion of helpful information for families dealing with this disease. This includes an excellent overview of the nature of FTD and its subtypes. As a caregiver to my wife who has Alzheimer’s, I found her discussion of the differences between the two diagnoses to be of particular relevance. People have often asked me if we have experienced some of the symptoms she relates as common to FTD. We have not. She has helped me understand why our experience is so different from hers.That leads me to emphasize that this is not only relevant to families living with FTD but to anyone with a more general interest in dementia. Dr. Anbar is an author with a PhD in early childhood education and has utilized her research skills to collect a large body of technical, but useful, information about FTD. Don’t let that scare you away. She writes in a way that is quite accessible to the average reader. I highly recommend her book.
When I began reading Dr. Ada Anbar’s newest work, “When Love Meets Dementia-Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) and the Family,†I had minimal knowledge and understanding of Frontotemporal Degeneration. Dr. Anbar’s book presents information in a very approachable manner and I concluded my reading with a much more thorough understanding of the many dimensions of FTD. Her recounting of her husband’s illness and the struggle of her family to stay connected and supportive is poignant and exemplary. In subsequent chapters, Dr. Anbar provides the reader with a wealth of information about the disease, all scientifically accurate but presented in language that is accessible to the layman. We are still in the early stages of understanding FTD; Dr. Anbar’s pioneering book is bound to become a foundational resource for all who need to learn more, whether in the role of patient, caregiver, friend, family member or physician. Even if you are not involved with an FTD patient, I highly recommend reading this book to learn more about the extraordinary Anbar family and be inspired by the depth and breadth of Dr. Anbar’s knowledge, compassion and writing talent

Once you wipe away the tears after completing the first section of Ada’s personal story, you’ll want to put on your “let’s get to work†hat as you dive into the very meaty and thorough technical section.If you are dealing with a loved one with any form of dementia, you'll completely understand and relate to what Dr. Anbar went through on a personal level. The ideas she shares for dealing with this cruel disease on a personal, financial and family level will encourage you. And the resilience, understanding and complete love she demonstrates for a husband who treated her very poorly due to this disease is astounding and inspirational.You’ll find hope and encouragement throughout this book. I highly recommend it.
This book is really two books in one. The first part is a loving memoir of a family struggling with their husband and father's increasingly erratic behavior. The second part is a medical resource for doctor's and family members who need answers to their questions regarding this horrible disease. It is extremely well written and easy to understand.
