From Booklist
The latest title in DK’s clever and engaging Big Ideas Simply Explained series takes a unique approach to general science topics. The history of science is presented in six chapters, titled The Beginning of Science (600 BCE–1400 CE); Scientific Revolution (1400–1700); Expanding Horizons (1700–1800); A Century of Progress (1800–1900); A Paradigm Shift (1900–1945); and Fundamental Building Blocks (1945–Present). Everything is covered here—astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, geology, and physics. Chapters contain a variety of short essays, each accompanied by an In Context sidebar, brief biographies of influential thinkers, and illustrations, including flowcharts, graphs, and pictures. Example topics include At the Center of Everything Is the Sun, Discovering New Planets, Elements Always Combine the Same Way, Quantum Model of Computing, and We Are Made of Stardust. The book concludes with a time-line-style directory of key people in the sciences, a brief glossary, and an index. As with others in the series, the standout feature of this book is its ability to take complex topics and make them easy to understand via readable essays and an appealing format. Overall, this book is an excellent introduction to a variety of science topics and is suitable for the circulating collections of most high-school and public libraries. --Rebecca Vnuk

When I saw "The Science Book (Big Ideas Simply Explained)" I was pretty excited because I love science and understanding how things work. To be honest it's been a few decades since I have studied any of this in school so I was looking forward to re-learning things I used to know and learning some new stuff. What a disappointment when I started reading the book and it turns out to be more of a History of Science, or perhaps a Who's Who of Science. It does cover the HISTORY of many of the great discoveries of science but if you're looking for a book that will tell you the functions of the different parts of a human cell, or the equation for how fast objects fall in a vacuum, or how to balance a chemical equation, this is NOT the book for you. If, however, you are a history geek (rather than a science geek) then you will probably love this book.
Many good contents. Just as original as The Psychology Book. This fills in missing gaps in my understanding of science, including many major discoveries that may not have been covered in school, or are often reserved for more advanced students. This text is readable, detailed, and covers a lot of interesting themes. And the concept is great.
This book has been a great purchase for my kids. I love how it provides some simple statements about our current understanding of a ton of things, from quarks, to cloning, all the way through radioactive decay. This is another excellent DK book with superior illustrations and easy-to-follow text. Great for all ages!
I loved this series of books! I'm already a fan of the "Dummies" and "Idiots" books, which simplify and organize information for those of us with Big Curiosity, but Little Patience! This series, BIG IDEAS SIMPLY EXPLAINED, are wonderful, concise, simply, explanations of profound ideas. I would recommend them for general reading, overall understanding before studying a subject, or just leafing through when a question occurs.
I am happy to recommend this book as a fine overview of a vast subject which, more than any other, is at the root of our modern era. As a worker in the fields of particle-physics instrumentation and astrophysics and with some knowledge of exo-biology, I ran across many familiar stories and some interesting new ones. The authors wisely leave the math to mere illustrations, so that anyone can enjoy this book.
This is a great "interest-generating" resource book. It highlights some interesting scientific discoveries and the scientists who made them. Sometimes we flip the book open at random and read, and sometimes we select a topic and read; either way it is a fun introduction.
It was fascinating to see how theories became facts and how other people built upon those facts to further our knowledge about our world and the universe.I would like to have seen one idea taken from beginning to end, instead of bouncing back and forth from topic to topic.Great read!
As technology evolves exponentially in our global society it is helpful to have a basic guide to the foundation of the building blocks that launched us into this new age of scientific progress. The Science Book enriches your knowledge of many of the events that are currently in the news. An excellent reference guide for experts as well as readers seeking general knowledge.
