In a collection of seventeen articles focusing on six Latin American countries (Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Maxico,and Cuba), New York Times journalist Ana Guillermoprieto serves up a highly literate and gracefully scripted collage of Latin America today. The limited selection of countries and issues should not detract from the value of this book in understanding the region as a whole, for each of the sets of articles offers some broader insight beyond just the personalities or countries described. The author artfully combines first-hand interviews and reportage from the region with research and masterfully chosen extracts from other important books on this region.Her concise piece on Eva Peron is illustrative of her incisiveness and left me better informed than other sources on this somewhat mystifying subject ( see, for example, Evita: An Intimate Portrait of Eva Peron, which I have also reviewed on this website.). By ably reviewing the literature and carefully distinguishing between fact, hearsay, and speculation, the author unravels some myseries surrounding this QUOTE bland and to all appearances untalented girl, born illegitimate and on a ranch...possesed of an unreconstructed working-class accent and an unfailing gauche manner..in a country where upper-class snobbery reaches extremes of refinement and viciousness UNQUOTEI also enjoyed an excellent piece on Peruvian writer turned presidential candidate Mario Vargas Llosa whose biographcial sketch the author weaves into a broader portrait of Peruvian politics and society in the 1990s.The pieces on Colombia, Mexico, and Cuba may seem dated at first glance, but in fact provide penetrating insights into the Zapatistas, Colombia's civil strife, and Castro. Among books on Latin America, it is unusual in its ability to avoid pretending to be apolitical, while not falling prey to a facile ideological analysis.This book is a reflection of journalism at its best and is written by someone who is not simply peering into Latin America with an outsider's eye, but has a deep sense of the myths, conflicts, and legacies that gives soul to this part of the world. This book should not be a disappointment to anyone with more than a passing interest in Latin America. You may also consider complementing this book with a more pictorial account of this region (see, for example, America Latina by Fabienne Rousso-Lenoir, which I have also reviewed on this website).

If you want to know what was happening in Colombia, Cuba, or Mexico during the period 1994-2001, or if you want to look back to that time and the events or trends in those countries then, this would be a most excellent choice. The author not only has chapters about three giant Latin American personalities---Eva Peron, Che Guevara, and Mario Vargas Llosa---but includes interviews and impressions of a number of other Latin Americans who might not be household words in the Anglo-Saxon world. However, I did not find the title very apt. History is more or less lacking here (OK, she was looking for it, we don't find it.) If you aren't familiar with say, 20th century Mexican history, you are going to be scratching your head. And while the impressions are vivid, and she definitely interviewed the right people, I got the feeling that this book would fall into a crack---for those in the know, at least those who already knew a lot about Latin America, it may be old hat. If you read some decent newspapers or weeklies during the period under review, you probably already got a number of these stories, or knew that Cuba, for example, underwent great economic strife when the Soviet Union collapsed and had to boost a moribund economy that could not support itself on sugar alone. That Colombia had a drug and paramilitary/guerrilla problem and that Mexico is corrupt is not exactly big news. As articles that I might have read in a newspaper, these would be topnotch, way better than average. However, I think the book's main problem is, if I may put it this way---choice of audience. If you don't know much about Latin America, I don't think you will be able to start here---it's too detailed without enough background. It will depend on where you are coming from. I found the book interesting, but I was hoping for more insight and overview from a person who obviously knows way more than I ever will.

This is an excellent primer for the reader who seeks an overview of the diverse currents in modern Latin America. The study is not comprehensive; it is a sampler of articles addressing a number of separate and distinct Latin American situations (Cuba, Peru, Mexico, Colombia) which includes historical figures who served as catalysts (Eva Peron, Che Guevara). She references a number of other recent (accurate and well written) works on Latin America enabling the reader to pursue additional study.Guillermoprieto writes in a clear, crisp readable fashion which incorporating understatement and irony. Her perspective is Latin American and she is direct and honest regarding the pervasive influence of the United States. Refreshingly, however, she refrains from simplistically depicting Latin Americans as martyrs and clearly places an appropriate degree of responsibility with Latin Americans for their own fate.A fine book -- well written, interesting, informative. Highly recommended for the person who wishes to get further up to speed on the complex and extremely varied social and political milieus in the hemisphere's Spanish speaking nations.

"A new collection of letters, edited by Christine Flanagan, is a treasure trove for scholars of both Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) and Caroline Gordon (1895-1981). At first glance, O'Connor and Gordon would not seem to have that much in common, except that they were both writers. For much of her life, O'Connor battled lupus, which would eventually be the cause of her death at the young age of thirty-nine. She was unmarried and lived with her mother, Regina, on their Georgia farm, Andalusia. Gordon, thirty years O'Connor's senior, died at the old age of eighty-one, and throughout her life, she too suffered, but in different ways. Even during her life, Gordon was more known as a wife of poet Allen Tate than as a novelist in her own right. Her ailments were mental and spiritual in nature as she battled alcoholism, a mentally unstable daughter, Tate's frequent infidelities, his own addiction to alcohol, and incredible debt, which Gordon was always mitigating." Mini Barbecue Chicken Pizzas   2 teaspoons olive oil 1 lb skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into cubes 1 cup barbecue sauce Bread flour, for dusting 1 recipe Basic Pizza Dough (page 24) 1⁄2 cup No-Cook Tomato Sauce (page 66) 1⁄2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Sliced green onion and chopped fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish  * Makes 4 Mini Pizzas   Place a rack in the lower half of the oven. Place an inverted baking sheet on the rack and preheat to 450°F.   In a frying pan over high heat, warm the oil. Carefully add the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium, add ½ cup of the barbecue sauce, and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 8 minutes. Remove from the heat.   Cut 2 sheets of parchment paper the size of a baking sheet and dust with flour. Working directly on the parchment, roll out the pizza dough into 4 rounds, each 10–12 inches in diameter (2 rounds on each parchment sheet). Divide the tomato sauce and the remaining ½ cup barbecue sauce between the pizzas and spread evenly. Top each with the cheese and chicken, dividing evenly. Have an adult help you remove the baking sheet from the oven; it will be very hot. Slide one piece of the parchment with 2 pizzas onto the inverted baking sheet and return it to the oven. Bake until the crust is dry and golden brown and the cheese is bubbly, 8–10 minutes. Carefully remove the pizzas from the oven and let cool for a few minutes, then top with half of the green onion and cilantro. Cut into wedges and serve. Return the baking sheet to the oven to preheat and repeat to bake the other 2 pizzas.

That the true monsters here include the hatemongers, and not just the tentacled horrors running about, is never in question. Yet between Liu's lyricism and the utter breathtaking beauty of Takeda's art, it's tempting not to care about the story at all. It's a pleasant bonus, then, that Volume Two provides answers to some of the crucial questions driving this in medias res story, and some welcome character development for both Maika and her resident monster. New mysteries appear as well, so readers can look forward to the continuation of this macabre, masterly series.

Great story beautiful art. It's amazing.

4.5 stars.Marjorie Liu has done an admirable job in building a beautiful fantasy world with a well thought out history, wondrous places, and many different factions. At the end of each volume is a map that one can (needs to) refer to in order to understand the locations and sides. The artwork is meticulously and lushly rendered. My only ding on this (from 5 to 4.5 stars) is that there are so many different factions within the various alliances that have been introduced quite quickly that one can't process all of it accurately and deeply during the first reading. That may be an unfair hit though, as many of the great fantasy worlds are great because multiple readings/viewings enhance and enrich the experience.Liu's work is dominated by female characters, but it isn't a political or social commentary on life in the 21st century. It is just a wonderful story that happens to have strong female leads. This is most welcome. Marvel comics, in particular, has been accused by some as pushing diversity for sales/diversity sake. Having more diverse characters is a good thing, but even more important is having quality stories. I brought this up to Junot Diaz, a friend of Ms. Liu's (fellow current Bostonian and also winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize), at an event at a local college last year. Mr. Diaz replied to the effect (I'm paraphrasing), "Part of the privilege white people enjoy is the ability to produce crap and keep doing it. When minorities produce crap, they don't get a second chance. In order to have quality work, we need to sift through a lot of crap."Ms. Liu's work is outstanding. Some will look at it as the work of a female or minority writer, while others will say it is the work of a comic writer. Regardless of your political/social leanings, you will probably find that you appreciate the dialogue, enjoy the well-rounded and complex characters, admire the art, and are kept interested in the intricate and progressive plot. This is probably the fictional comic of the moment, more so than other great contemporaries such as Saga, Injection or Manifest Destiny.

Again, amazed by the beautiful artwork in this series. Sana Takeda does a fantastic job of bringing the world to life, it's just so detailed and gorgeous. It took me a chapter or two to get back into the story, but once it got going I was sucked in. We get some interesting backstory from Maika's childhood with her mother, some questions get answered, and plenty of new questions are raised. Whew, that ending.

Stumbled upon this series after reading an article that it was up for an award. I picked up volume 1, quickly followed by volumes 2 & 3. Beautiful artwork and story combination. THE Only bad thing is that I am now caught up and have to wait for more...:(

I'm one of the very few who's not madly in love with this series, but it's dull both in art style and in the story. The main character is gruff and I find myself not caring what happens or doesn't happen to her because everything takes too damn long and her mommy issues got old very fast.

I love this series and the more I read the more I enjoy it. I love the writing and the art is beautiful and I cannot wait to get volume three. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes action comic books or stories with strong female characters who are also really well written. Of course if gore or explicit language or violence aren't your cup of tea then maybe this isn't the series for you.

This series continues to be beautiful and astonishingly original. It's emotional, sometimes searingly sad. A remarkable demonstration of what comics are capable of when the right artist and writer combine forces. When I finished reading, I immediately flipped to the beginning and began rereading. Highly, highly recommended.

The most original fantasy story I have ever read. There is nothing else like this. It may not appeal to everyone, but it’s hard to not appreciate the creative genius behind the story. Plus the art is gorgeous.

Wonderful artwork, great and engrossing story. This TPB was longer than I would expect and filled with quite a bit of content. I've really enjoyed the series so far and look forward to the release of the next volume.

I found this book online and was not even aware that Agatha Christie had written something like this. A murder mystery that was very fast paced and interesting.

“And Then There Were None” is a thrilling murder mystery written by Agatha Christie. When ten people are invited to Soldier Island by a mysterious character, U. N. Owen, the guests find themselves in a dangerous situation as they watch each other get picked off one by one according to an old nursery rhyme. The novel keeps you guessing, and chances are you won’t know who the murderer is until the last page of the book. Although I enjoyed reading “And Then There Were None”, it was quite hard to motivate myself to get through the first 40 or so pages. The book begins by describing the characters, which is common in books that were written in the 1930’s. It becomes a lengthy process considering the large amount there are, and was my least favorite part of the book. Not that the old style is bad, but it really shines through considering the first line of the book talks about Mr. Justice Wargrave "In the corner of a first-class smoking carriage" on a train. Aside from that, the book was partly predictable. When and how the murders will occur is easy to guess, but who will die and who did it is up in the air, keeping the mystery present. All in all, the cons are not a reason to forgo reading this book. Lastly, the entire book and murder is psychotic, but in an intriguing way. I was disturbed by the end of the book, only because some of the murders and the plan behind them was simply insane. Having said that, Agatha Christie used this to create another of her thrilling mysteries. I would recommend this book, and the advice I would give to a reader is don’t be discouraged as a result of the beginning. Push through the first few sections, and you’ll find a whole new situation which moves much more quickly.

Having read everything she had written, I've always debated as to which of Agatha Christie's works tops my list. For a while it was "ABC Murders". But, having re-read "And Then There Were None," I came to a conclusion that there's simply nothing else like it, and it tops my list. This novel once again proves that Christie was one of the best writers of the 20th century. It is so much more than just a "mystery" novel - it has it all: amazing character development, fabulous use of English language, top-notch plot, and knock-your-socks-off ending. One can debate as to whether or not this novel was intended to be "solved" by the reader, but at some point it becomes irrelevant. The originality of this novel is nothing short of stunning! No other "mystery" novel, in my opinion, tops this in terms of psychology, character development, and literary style. An amazing piece written by an amazing writer! In terms of pure "mystery," "ABC Murders" still tops my list, but I consider "And Then There Were None" to be the finest novel Christie has ever written. The only issue I have with this particular edition is: Political Correctness once again surfaces! It substitutes "soldiers" for "indians"!! Not that it makes much difference, but really....... for crying' out loud: GROW UP!!!!!!!!

Having just finished my first Agatha Christie novel, I had to ask myself what in the world was I waiting for. This book is a delightful read. It is no wonder that the author has sold more than a billion books worldwide. This book was just plain fun to read. Anyone who has ever seen himself as a amateur detective or who is a big fan of whodunits will be kept guessing at every turn. And the way that the bad guy (or gal) is revealed to the reader in a truly unique way. Go away John Sandford. Hang it up James Patterson. If you have read one you have read them all. I think that I am going to book passage on the Orient Express.

Marvelous. I came into this a bonafide Agatha Christie virgin and came out an addict. What a fun, quick-paced read! The characters were clear, and often many levels deeper (and far more sinister) than they appear. Out of the 10 souls stuck on Soldier Island, I did initially guess correctly the mastermind -- but Christie is sooo good at seeding doubt. "Oh, this guy would be logically the murderer. You know who's even more likely? THIS guy."One of my favorite bits about this well-written whodunnit? The Vera/Philip relationship. Two, young guests on Soldier Island who clearly have some attraction to one another. Christie sets up little hints until she turns it on its head and reminds both characters, "Oh yeah, either one of you could be a megalomaniacal murderer." Screw romance. Romance is dead. Christie is dedicated in this book to just making some macabre fun.

Very, very clever! So clever that I may read it again some day even though I know the ending, or actually BECAUSE I know the ending and want to read once again how Agatha Christie adroitly executed the plot.Well written and enjoyable.I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. The only reason I didn't give it five is because it wasn't emotionally satisfying. I didn't connect with the characters and feel their fear as I have in other mysteries, but intellectually it was extremely satisfying.

I will keep this on my shelf as a reference book. Its a great book for any collection care, not just American Indian artifacts. I didn't sit and read it from front to back but it will be used!

I'm a museum professional and I read a lot of lofty british books about museum theory. I often buy a book thinking that the title and synopsis is that of a more "nuts and bolts" book on museum work. I am often mistaken. This book IS that resource. It tells you in very practical and concrete examples exactly WHAT it is that you should DO. Its like a primer on object care. The content can be carried across to collections that are not native in origin. Other objects might consist of the same materials. They really cover everything, I mean EVERYTHING. There is everything from handling, display and conservation of objects. There's even a handy part in the back with other books they recommend, resources for materials, and more. I'm going to make every potential employee read this book right when they start!
