From Booklist

*Starred Review* How do you catch a fish, if you're in New England or Japan? These 13 poems narrate in first-person voices the ways of fishing in specific locales around the world. In Turtle Bay, Tobago, it's seine fishing; in the Gap of Dunloe, they fly-fish. The handsome, full-page oil paintings are rendered in an impressionistic style that evokes the atmospheres of watery, misty, aquatic environments. This original idea pays tribute to the sport, skill, craft, livelihood, and tradition of angling as the text imparts an individual character to a universal experience. Take, for example, log-boat fishing in the Okavango River, Namibia: "We hide—among the reeds that / by the riverbank so thickly grow— / or float on water, shallow, slow / in logboats crafted long and narrow, / waiting with a watching eye / to take the fish with bow and arrow." The last verse poignantly expresses how rigging their rods bonds a parent and child—who is in this case a girl. Resonating poetic vignettes spawn a glinting, striking catch. Cummins, Julie

Review

Kirkus Reviews  There definitely isn’t just one way, as Frank and Sylvada demonstrate in deft poetry and impressionistic scenes of anglers worldwide. The text, which can be read as either one long poem or a series of untitled short ones, creates a harmonious rhythm with subtle shifts of beat and occasional rhyming: “Propelled by currents swift and strong, / our fishwheel rotates round and round, / its soft metallic hollow sound / as rhythmic as a beaten drum. . . . ” In the art, indistinct figures—almost invariably an adult and a child together—cast lures, flies or nets, stand in boats or drop lines off a dock, check for likely spots or proudly display catches. Along with glimpses of ice fishers on Baffin Island, snorklers in New Caledonia, seine fishers in Tobago, cormorant tenders in Japan and more, sensitive young readers will catch a feeling here for the universal ties between parent and child that rise from any shared activity. Going fishing!

"How to Catch A Fish" is an 11 1/4 inch by 8 3/4 inch 30 page children's picture book. Every other page has a full color and full page washed out oil painting in the Impressionist style. Each illustration conveys the misty, foamy, salty, foggy feelings associated with fishing around the world. The book contains thirteen multi-cultural poems to describe how fishing is conducted in various locations around the world. Poems in the book portray fishing methods in the following locations:Seine Fishing - Turtle Bay, TobagoAngling for coho - Columbia River, WashingtonFly fishing - Gap of Dunloe, IrelandIce Fishing - Baffin Island, NunavutUkai, (cormorant fishing) - Nagara River, JapanSurf casting - Montauk Point, New YorkWatu (logboat) - Okavango River, NamibiaSpear Fishing - New Caledonia, Southwest PacificDip Netting - Ishi Pishi Falls, CaliforniaFishwheel - Frazer Canyon, British ColumbiaAngling for Bass - Chattahoochee National Forest, GeorgiaDeep Sea fishing - Kona, HawaiiPier Fishing - Gulf Coast, FloridaMy favorite poem is the one about fishing by using cormorant birds in the Nagara River in Japan. In this particular poem we learn that the Japanese clamp a metal collar on a cormorant and attach a leash to it. They paddle up the Nagara River at night time. The fishermen carry metal baskets of flickering fire on their flat bottomed boats which draw sweetfish near. Overboard the leashed cormorants dive and seize the fish but can't swallow them because they are too big. So the fishermen remove the fish from the cormorant's mouths. These poems give the reader a wonderful glimpse of fishing from around the world. The reader develops an appreciation for other cultures as they enjoy reading or listening to these poems read aloud. Most of the poetry is rhyming and easy to read. I believe most children above the age of nine could read these poems with understanding and all children except the very young, could appreciate the oral reading of the poems. I gave this book a four star rating because the impressionistic illustrations are not that appealing to me. I prefer more realistic illustrations. However, the book is an excellent children's book that will create interest in and appreciation of poetry. It is also a wonderful tool to teach appreciation of other cultures.
