Review

"Electrifying. . . . Freeman brings the contentious, devious, shape-shifting, revengeful gods and goddesses, from Zeus and Hera on down, to towering life, recounting their violent exploits with verve and clarity." --"Booklist""A thoroughly delightful book." --Jules Wagman, "The St. Louis Post-Dispatch""Each story is written eloquently and with sincere enthusiasm for the narration of these myths. . . . Highly accessible." --"Library Journal""Philip Freeman must be thanked for his contribution to the process of keeping the Classics alive in the modern world. . . . "Oh My Gods" is another contribution to the enlivening of antiquity and like his other works this collection is a thoughtful and essentially well-written work."

I am traveling to Greece and I wanted to expand my knowledge of Greek mythology. I had a class in high school and remembered some of the stories but there are many in this book I was unfamiliar with. The book is easy to read and, for me, has just the right amount of information. It's straight forward...no commentary or analysis. Read and enjoy. Just what I was looking for.

Not very well written, repetitive, wordy.Definitely not recommended for children as almost all god/goddess and god/human encounters involve rape.

I found this book to be quite difficult to read. I had a hard time keeping up with the several genealogies of the deities' families Trying to keep up with who was who and how they fit into they overall scheme of things was difficult. However the book was interesting and I learned a few new things, e.g., the Romeo and Juliet story had its basis in Greek Mythology.

I couldn't be more pleased with this splendid refresher on the Greek and Roman myths. This is broken down into sections on each of the Gods and Goddesses, as well as sections on heroes like Theseus and Perseus and on Lovers like Orpheus and Eurydice. Then the book covers the major stories: Hercules, Oedipus, Argonauts, Troy, Mycenae, Odysseus, Aeneas and the myths surrounding Rome from Romulus and Remus to Lucretia.I wanted more than an encyclopedic guide to these myths, a book like this one with lively and entertaining stories, retellings of the myths in much shorter refreshers. I realize I'll never have time enough to go back and read them all again (and a few for the first time). So this is perfect.Top rated recommendation.

This book was not really what I thought it would be, but I still loved it. I thought it would be a 'modern re-telling' something similar to Gods Behaving Badly.... but it is really more of an encyclopedia of Greek Gods, giving a straightforward and didactic account of their lives/deeds. Well written and super informative.

a history book that is actually readable

perfect

This book is an excellent introduction to all the Greek gods, goddesses, nymphs and everyone else in between. As someone who never studied them in school, I was delighted when this book came out. It's witty, easy to follow and fun to read. Great job!
