From School Library Journal

Gr 6–9—Puberty does indeed happen to everyone—bringing with it physical and emotional changes. Originally published in Germany with support from the Berlin Family Planning Centre, this quirky guide tackles 70 of the most frequently asked questions from tweens and young teens on body changes, sex, pregnancy, crushes, and other related topics. Helms provides straightforward and nonjudgmental answers to some hot-button topics ("How Old Do I Have to Be Before I Can Get the Pill Without My Parents' Consent?"; "Am I Allowed to Watch Porn Online or on My Phone?"). Von Holleben's clever and eye-catching photos provide a whimsical touch to the subject matter, though some may find the images a bit risqué (a neat row of various sized carrots demonstrates that everyone's body parts are unique, while another photo depicts preteens blowing up condoms into balloons). While this is a fairly comprehensive examination of the topic, there isn't much information addressing LGBTQ issues. This may not be the ideal primer on puberty for everyone, but those looking for a title with a light tone and a sense of humor will find this a solid choice to help open the dialogue between parents and kids who are on the cusp of maturing from children into young adults.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta

Review

"This book is ideal … for children aged eleven and older to help answer the questions they may be too shy to ask or had not thought about asking yet! It’s fun and relaxed attitude make it both an educational and entertaining read for young people on the brink of puberty … useful and timeless." The School Librarian“Taking an empathetic and respectful approach to sex education, Von Hollenben and Helms blend humor, factual information, and candid advice. A valuable resource that normalizes and affirms sexuality while suggesting that puberty is a time of both physical and intellectual growth.” - Publisher’s Weekly Starred Review"Many middle-school-age kids are embarrassed to ask adults about puberty and sex, and the playful presentation of facts and frank tone make this a comfortable entry point to further discussions about sexual health and developing bodies." --Booklist

Kids really do want to know, and all of our Michigan sex Ed classes have been cut. I'm going to make sure my kids aren't lacking knowledge. I'll tell them what I personally think about sex/relationships myself. I want them to be educated about how the process actually works.

This book is worth looking at for the pictures alone--they're highly creative and entertaining. However, I don't think the content is age-appropriate. The part where it explains about how you'll forget all about your massive homework assignment while you're in bed with your sweetie is a little off-putting, to say the least. A pubescent child needs information about puberty and basic information about what sex is, but the book makes it sound like as soon as you sprout pubic hair and feel "ready," you get to hop into bed. It was originally published in Germany, so perhaps it only makes me uncomfortable because I'm from the United States. Still, not a book I would recommend for a prepubescent child. Maybe it would be more useful for a parent to thumb through to get the facts and talk about them with a (slightly older) child, rather than just giving it outright. I have no problem with the information itself--I just think it's more for adults, but then, adults don't need a book on puberty!

A wonderful book, with real, honest, and non-shaming answers to the questions that every kid is wondering.

Hated it. Horrible book. Did I mention I hated it??I knew this book had a European feel when it talked about having sex with anyone, anywhere, anytime you feel like it ( “on your parents’ living room floor,” for example). And be sure to check the laws where you live, so you don’t send your sex partner to prison!! Who IS this author? Not an expert on relationships or successful families. This book encourages kids to masturbate (calling it “an excellent form of contraception”) and says porn is magical and mythical and “won’t kill you,” though it mentions that it can be scary, disturbing, and cause nightmares. You’ll also find “helpful” answers to questions like these: “How many times is it okay to masturbate in a week?” (Answer: “It’s up to you, and if anyone tries to tell you it’s unhealthy they don’t know what they’re talking about. Masturbating is great.”) And “Can my parents forbid me from having sex?” (Answer: “Not really,” and it goes on to explain that their stupid reasons might make you angry, but….) “Is sex dangerous or unhealthy?” (Answer: Sex is one of the healthiest things in the world… endorphins boost your immune system.") I don’t think teens need to worry too much about boosting their immune system with sex! Luckily, it does mention STD’s and AIDS… just use condoms. “How old to I have to be before I can get the Pill without my parents’ consent?” Oh, great question! (Answer: No matter the age of consent where you live, you can get contraception at any age and without your parents knowing.) Perfect. Encourage them to lie and deceive. The section on “What makes you gay or lesbian?” turned my stomach. The author lists a few species of animals that “live from time to time, or even their whole lives, with a member of the same sex… Seeing as humans are animals too, why should we be any different?” What about the 99.9 percent of all species that multiply and reproduce as nature intended?? And, it goes on...“You might find that you like a boy for a while, and then later get a crush on a girl. That’s totally fine… Lots of girls feel attracted to other girls during puberty, and some try out kissing each other to see what it’s like. Boys can also feel drawn to other boys during puberty, and even if they go for girls later in life, it’s not unusual for them to have had their first sexual experience with a boy.” I doubt it. Where is the PROOF of that! Where are the statistics and references? There are none. Exaggerated and fictitious. Again, this book is encouraging sexual exploration at any age and with anyone, rather than self-control and respect for the sacred power between a man and a woman to create life.Bottom line: If you have morals and values and believe sex is sacred, this is not the book for you or your child. If you want to teach your child about sexual purity and the ultimate expression of love in marriage, I would HIGHLY recommend “How to Talk to Your Kids About Sex” by Linda and Richard Eyre, and “Understanding Your Sacred Body: teaching sexuality from a spiritual perspective” by Shoba Vinson. Also “Growing Up: Gospel Answers about Maturation and Sex” by Brad Wilcox.
