This romance story very different from any love story I have ever read. I still have not decided if I like it or not. Duncan Lee Morgan was on the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum disorder. Having a family member with autism, I know the kind of angst in raising a male child with autism. I noticed that the author stayed away from calling Duncan autistic but said he had the spectrum. Xyla did an awesome job in her researching the habits of certain spectrum affected people and nailed it with some of their habits. On the second person in this relationship Portia Lane, I'm not sure if I could open my mind up the way she did in her relationship with Duncan. They both had great support in their friends Bernadette and Trent. Bernie was in Portia's position only a couple of years prior when she was running from Trent before their marriage. Now Portia finds herself in the same predicament with Duncan.Duncan, even though he has a very special personality, has learned how to cope and manage his triggers through lots of therapy. When he sees Portia for the first time, he had this feeling that he was supposed to marry her and he was determined to make it so. He did not win her heart until he supported her in her confrontation with her mother Vivian, whom she did not have a good relationship with and blamed for her father's death. It was not until her mother wrote Duncan a letter that he found out that Portia had meltdowns too and was there for her. That was so sweet of him and that was what melted Portia's heart. Here was a man that was determined to make her happy and give her anything her heart desired, just like her father used to. How could she say no to the man.I would have liked to have seen Portia and Duncan become parents and see how Duncan would handle fatherhood in the epilogue. But, hopefully that will be covered in a future "Across The Aisles" book.
Love is amazing. Duncan and Portia are the most beautiful couple with their straight talk and adaptability for each other without losing who they are. I was laughing so hard because the conversations and ultimate translations were so funny. Bernie and Trent got to help Portia with her truth just as she did for them. The loving as usual was on point. Cross my legs and get me the house!I loved that the hero was not by some standards "normal". Duncan was simply amazing. He overcame so much. I appreciated his logical stances but also his love for Portia. They picked up on the little things that would bring them joy. I love questionnaire. It really would help to see if continued dating was a good idea. No point in wasting time.I have friends that are on different portions of the spectrum. Each has a different thing that keeps them grounded. It's really important to understand and observe.Duncan's attention to facts and data remind me a lot of one of my friends husband. This was an absolute joy to read. I had to finish it in one sitting. It moved quickly and the important people were present. Looking forward to the next Senator to find his great love and join the movement.
When I read the author statement at the beginning of the book, I was thinking, "How is Duncan not a typical Xyla Turner hero?". I'm going to find out. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I was #TeamPortia from her role as Bernadette's friend in Trent. I was happy to see that she was getting her own love. I was so not ready for Duncan, but I'm glad he was ready to be heard. Duncan is different, but he had me three pages into the book. I was fussing at Portia to quit tripping and give that man a chance. I was all in. I purchased this book on the release day and read it in one sitting the same night. The story is well written, and grabs the reader right away. Yes, there are steamy parts, but for me was more about watching Portia and Duncan really see themselves and one another and come together. There is still the political element, but I forgive Duncan for being a Repulican. It's my hope that when he makes an appearance in future books in the series that he will see the light and it will make logical sense to change parties.
Duncan was a great book and I just loved how he didn't let his disability keep him from living the prefect life. Portia was all kinds of different but she knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to tell it like it is. Once Duncan had something in his head he went for it and what he wanted was Portia. No matter if they where dinner friends or lunch friends he wanted her. Portia on the other hand didn't understand his heavy handiness and it to her really opening her mind and heart to Duncan he was everything her father was but for her as a husband. This book gave you a look at what others looked at a person with this kind of disability as he shouldn't be able to make it in the real world. Duncan went above and beyond to show people that his disability didn't define him. The love he felt for Portia was something he never knew how to put into words, but he showed her in a way he knew how. Please everyone go out and get this book you won't be disappointed.
Let me just start by saying that I loved, loved, loved Duncan’s and Portia’s story! Xyla is a masterful wordsmith and storyteller with an equally combustible sense of humor. From beginning to the end, I couldn’t stop laughing. Seeing Portia live and in full effect was a treat. To say the woman is funny, is like calling the Atomic Bomb a firecracker! She’s explosive and in yo’ face honest; can and will stand her ground when it comes to fighting for what’s right; ride or die to the end! Duncan is a sweetheart. His brutal honesty is not for the squeamish or faint of heart! He may not understand on an emotional or social level but his capacity for deductive reasoning and comprehension is superior to those that society deems “normalâ€! This is only surpassed by his compassion and love for those he trust. Doggedly stubborn when it comes to what he wants. Two souls damaged in childhood, different as night and day, find a love neither thought they’d ever have!
